Wanja Leads LU Men at Rice Tournament

HOUSTON - Senior David Wanja led a trio of Lamar University tennis players at the Courtyard by Marriot Rice Invitational over the weekend, picking up a pair of wins over players from Rice and Prairie View A&M at Jake Hess Stadium. In his first match in flight C, Wanja took down Vishnu Rajam of Rice 6-4, 6-2 before dropping a hard fought match to Taylor St. Eve of SMU 6-3, 6-4. In his final match the Katy, Texas native rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Nicholas Bateman of Prairie View. "David had a great weekend," said LU head coach Greg Davis. "He played extremely well in singles, picking up two wins with a hard fought loss thrown in there as well against SMU. He showed great potential for what he will be able to do this season." Also playing in flight C was Devin Harley, who was dropped by Bateman 6-3, 6-1 in his first match. In his second match of the tournament the sophomore from Nederland, Texas fell to Chong Wang of Rice 6-1, 6-3. The third player to take the court for Lamar was Tyler Cobb who went 1-1 on the weekend in flight D. The senior from Beaumont dropped his opening match to Brian Griffin of SMU 7-6, 6-0 before rebounding for a 7-6, 7-6 win over Jose Garcia of Prairie View. In doubles play Cobb and Harley paired up for two matches. The duo fell to Jon Greenberg and Vishnu Rajam of Rice on Saturday, and dropped a 9-7 decision to Naridor and Bateman of Prairie View on Sunday morning. The Cardinal men will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Waco, Texas for the Baylor Invitational.
