Lamar Finished Third at UNC-Greensboro/Mid Pines Intercollegiate
Sept. 14, 2004 SOUTHERN PINES, NC - Lamar, paced by stellar rounds from Casey Clendenon and Andre Metzger, posted the best team score in Tuesday's final round helping the Cardinals claim a third place finish at the UNC-Greensboro/Mid Pines Intercollegiate at Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club. Lamar posted a 5-under par 283 Tuesday for a 54-hole score of 5-over 869. Wichita State claimed the team championship at 11-under 853. Host UNC-Greensboro was second in the 17-team field at 1-over 865. Clendenon and Metzger both fired final rounds of 3-under 69 on Tuesday. Clendenon, a sophomore transfer from Houston/Katy HS, posted a 54-hole total of 2-over 218 in his first tournament as a Cardinal. Metzger, a senior from Norman, Okla., tied for 24th at 4-over 220. Nathan Stamey of UNC-Greensboro closed with a final round 2-under 70 to claim medalist honors at 5-under 211 on the 6,528-yard course. Rob Langley of Furman, Charlie Woo of Louisville and Brandan Price of Mercer tied for second at 3-under 213. Dawie Van Der Walt, a freshman from Cape Town South Africa, was Lamar's top finisher. He shot a final round 1-under 71 and tied for ninth place at even-par 216 in his first collegiate tournament. Sophomore Dusty Smith closed with a 2-over 74 and tied for 24th at 4-over 220. Senior Shawn Stefani tied for 59th at 229. Lamar will continue its fall schedule Monday and Tuesday at the Baylor Invitational.
