Dawie Van Der Walt Tied for 16th Place at the 47th Annual Porter Cup
July 27, 2005 LEWISTON, N.Y. - Lamar men's golfer Dawie Van Der Walt continues to play well in amateur events this summer, tying for 16th place at the 47th Annual Porter Cup at Niagara Falls Country Club. Van Der Walt, who was named Southland Conference freshman of the year, opened with rounds of 73 and 74 in the 72-hole event on the par-70 - 6,621-yard course. A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Van Der Walt picked up his play in the final two rounds. He shot a 1-under 69 in the third round and closed with a blistering 7-under 63 in Saturday's final round. He tied for 16th place with a 72-hole score of 1-under 279. Van Der Walt and Matt Every, who also fired a final round 63, tied for the low-round of the tournament. Pablo Martin shot four rounds in the 60s to win the Porter cup with a 72-hole score of 11-under 269. Ben Hayes and Jason Day tied for second place at 9-under 271. Van Der Walt has also played in the Monroe Invitational, Northeast Amateur, U.S. Amateur Public Links and the Southern Amateur. Additionally, he won the U.S. Amateur qualifier at Lake Charles Country Club on Monday with a 36-hole score of 8-under 136. The 105th U.S. Amateur is Aug. 22-28 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.
