Dawie Van Der Walt Moves Up to 65th After Second Round at Northeastern Amateur
June 24, 2005 RUMFORD, R.I. - Lamar men's golfer Dawie Van Der Walt fired a 1-under par 68 in Friday's second round to move up to 65th place at the 44th Northeastern Amateur at Wannamoisett Country Club. Van Der Walt, who shot an opening round 78 on Thursday, came back strong with a 1-under 68 on Friday and is tied for 65th place with Brendon Todd and Paul Simson at 8-over par 147. A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Van Der Walt started his round on the back-nine and made the turn at 3-under par. He birdied four holes on the back-nine, but bogeyed the par-five 18th hole for the second straight day. He bogeyed two holes on the front-nine for his round of 68. Kyle Reifers and Nicholas Thompson share the 36-hole lead as both players have posted consecutive rounds of 2-under par 67 for a 36-hole score of 4-under 134. Chris Kirk, who shared the 18-hole lead after an opening round 67, shot an even-par 69 on the 6,661-yard course and is third at 3-under 135. The 72-hole tournament continues today with tee times beginning at 7 a.m. (EDT).
