Lamar Places Four Golfers on All-Southland Conference Teams
May 3, 2005 PLANO - Freshman Dawie Van Der Walt was named 2005 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and was joined by three other Lamar golfers on all-conference teams, announced the league office on Tuesday. A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Van Der Walt was named to the All-SLC first team. He led the team and the SLC with a 72.92 spring scoring average. His season scoring average of 71.70 ranks 18th in the Golfstat collegiate ratings. Van Der Walt won medalist honors at Baylor and Nevada this season and posted top 10 finishes in seven of the 10 tournament he has played in this season. He has shot par or better in 18 of 27 rounds this season. He joins Gavin Flint (2000) and Chris Stroud (2001) as SLC freshman of the year recipients. Jordan Krantz of Texas-Arlington was named SLC player of the year, narrowly edging Van Der Walt, and headlines the All-SLC first team. Also earning first team honors were Tyrone Mordt of UTA, Tim Kunick of Louisiana-Monroe and Trevor Sauntry of Stephen F. Austin. Seniors Shawn Stefani and Andre Metzger earned second team All-SLC honors for the Cardinals. Stefani, a Baytown native, has a 73.63 season scoring average, which ranks sixth in the SLC. He posted three top 10 finishes this season, including a season-best tie for fourth place at Nevada. Metzger, a Norman, Okla. native, has a 73.30 scoring average, which ranks eighth in the SLC. He tied for eighth place at the LSU Invitational, which included shooting a season-low round of 4-under par 68. Joining Stefani and Metzger on the second team were Jeff Murray and Zach Reeves of UTA and Casey Russell of ULM. Lamar sophomore Dusty Smith was named to the All-SLC third team. A native of The Woodlands, Smith has a 73.40 spring scoring average, which ranks second on the team and fifth in the SLC. The tied for fifth at the Baylor Invitational, which included a career-low round of 6-under par 66. His best tournament this season is a tie for fourth at the Border Olympics. He has a 73.66 season scoring average.
Hugo Leon of Southeastern Louisiana, Pat Collogan of ULM, Robert Gwin of Sam Houston State and Nick Olivarri of Texas-San Antonio joined Smith on the third team. UTA dominated the specialty awards. In addition to Krantz earning player of the year honors, Murray was named SLC newcomer of the year and Jay Rees was named SLC coach of the year. Due to its regional ranking, Lamar will receive an at-large bid to an NCAA Regional May 19-21.
