Lamar Beats Texas; Falls to Florida State at Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship

GREENSBORO, Ga. - Lamar University pulled out a tie-breaking win over the University of Texas in the completion of Sunday's match, but the Cardinals stay at the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship came to a close Monday afternoon with a 3 and 2 loss to Florida State at Reynolds Plantation.

Sunday's match with Texas was suspended due to darkness with each team having won one match. Casey Clendenon, a senior from Katy, posted an 8 and 7 win over Hector Diaz-Ceballos. Charlie Holland defeated Russell Helson, a senior from Georgetown, 5 and 3.

Hugues Joannes, a sophomore from Brussels, Belgium, held on for a 3-up win over Jace Moore to give the Cardinals two wins. Texas' Kevin Schultz posted a 2 and 1 win over Will Gilchriest, a junior from Humble, to give the Longhorns two wins. Justin Harding, a junior from Cape Town, South Africa, won the 18th hole to square his match with Bobby Hudson. With the match tied a 2-2-1, the Cardinals advanced on the total number of holes won tie-breaker.

Lamar, who was the No. 11-seed, advanced to face No. 7-seed Florida State in the Consolation Bracket semifinals. Clendenon posted a 2-up win over Tommy Rymer. Joannes posted a 3 and 2 win over Drew Kittleson.

FSU's Jonas Blixt ran away with a 7 and 6 win over Gilchriest. Matthew Savage posted a 5 and 4 win over Harding. The match came down to the matchup between Russell Helson, a senior from Georgetown, and Seath Lauer.
 

 

Helson, who held as much as a 2-up lead through 13 holes, had the advantage trimmed to 1-up when Lauer won the 14th hole. Lauer went on to win the 15th hole to square the match and took a 1-up lead on the 16th hole. Helson and Lauer halved the remaining to holes to give Lauer a 1-up win and FSU a 3 and 2 win.

FSU advanced to Tuesday's Consolation Bracket championship against No. 1-seed Charlotte and Lamar was eliminated. In the Winners Bracket, No. 4-seed UCLA will face No. 3-seed Georgia Tech for the championship. The Bruins posted a 3-1-1 win over No.9-Florida and the Yellow Jackets defeated No. 10-South Carolina, 3 and 2.

Lamar closes out the fall season Nov. 6-7 at the CordeValle Collegiate hosted by UCLA.
