Lamar Falls to Georgia in First Round at Callaway Match Play Championship

Oct. 28, 2007

GREENSBORO, Ga. - Justin Harding and Casey Clendenon both posted wins for No. 11-seed Lamar University, but the Cardinals fell to No. 6-seed Georgia 3 and 2 in on of Sunday's opening matches at the Callaway Match Play Championship at Reynolds Plantation.

Harding, a junior from Cape Town, South Africa, cruised to a 7 and 5 win over Hudson Swafford. Harding won the first hole and Swafford captured the third hole to square the match. Harding won the next four holes and closed out the match by winning the 13th hole.

A senior from Katy, Clendenon posted a 2 and 1 win over Russell Henley. Clendenon took a 1-up lead on the ninth hole. He increased to a 2-up lead by winning the 13th hole and held off Henley for the win.

Georgia claimed the other three singles matches to advance to the winners bracket. Brian Harman posted a 4 and 3 win over Russell Helson, a senior from Georgetown. Harris English defeated Hugues Joannes, a sophomore from Brussels, Belgium, 6 and 4. Adam Mitchell held off Will Gilchriest, a junior from Humble, for a 1-up win in a tightly contested match.

Gilchriest won the second hole with a par, but Mitchell was quick to square the match on the next hole. Mitchell took a 1-up lead on the eighth hole. Mitchell won the 12th hole to go 2-up, but Gilchriest trimmed the margin back to 1-up by winning the 15th hole with a birdie. Mitchell won the 16th hole and Gilchriest claimed the 17th hole. Both players made a par on the 18th hole to secure the win for Mitchell.

The Cardinals dropped to the consolation bracket, where they faced No. 14-Texas, who lost 4 and 1 to No. 3-seed Georgia Tech Sunday morning. Like the rest of the eight afternoon matches, the Cardinals and Longhorns were unable to finish the match.

Two of the five individual matches were completed with Clendenon routing Hector Diaz-Ceballos 8 and 7. Clendenon took a 1-up lead on the first hole and went on to win seven straight holes starting with the fourth. He closed out the match with a par-4 on the 11th hole.

Texas' Charlie Holland posted a 4 and 3 win over Helson. The Longhorns Bobby Hudson has a 2-up lead over Harding through 13 holes. The match between Joannes and Jace Moore is all square through 13 holes and the match between Gilchriest and Kevin Schultz is all square through 15 holes.

Those matches will be completed Monday morning. The winner of the Lamar-Texas match will face the winner of the No. 7-seed Florida State-No. 15-seed Georgia State match Monday afternoon.
