Lamar Holds Off McNeese State, 4-2 and Claims Southland Conference East Division Title
May 17, 2007 BEAUMONT - Junior Allen Harrington tossed a complete-game and Collin DeLome and David Moore each hit home runs to give Lamar University a 4-2 win over McNeese State Thursday night in Southland Conference baseball action at Vincent-Beck Stadium, which gave the Cardinals the SLC East Division title. Lamar improved to 32-22 overall and 19-9 in SLC play. McNeese State dropped to 20-32 overall and 16-11 in SLC play. The Cardinals and Cowboys will continue the series Friday in Lake Charles with a 7 p.m. game at Cowboy Diamond and close out the three-game set Saturday at 1 p.m. Harrington (8-4), a Port Neches-Groves product, allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts in nine innings pitched. This was his team-leading fifth complete-game of the season. Erik Kanaby led off the bottom of the first inning with a double to right center field. He scored on successive wild pitchers from McNeese starter Derek Blacksher to give the Cardinals a quick 1-0 lead. Moore, a junior from Boulder, Colo., led off the bottom of the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to right field to give Lamar a 2-0 lead. It was Moore's sixth homer of the season. McNeese rallied to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning. Shon Landry singled up the middle and Joe Hulett followed with a 2-run home run to left center field that tied the game at 2-2. Lamar answered right back in the home half of the fourth inning. Travis Dunson singled to left field with two outs. Brian Lloyd followed with a double to the wall in right center field to drive in Dunson with the go-ahead run. DeLome, who was 2-for-4, led off the bottom of the eighth inning by hitting the first pitch from Blacksher over the wall in right center field to give the Cardinals an insurance run and a 4-2 lead. It was DeLome's ninth home run of the season and first since his 2-homer game against Nicholls State on April 1.
Harrington sat down the Cowboys in order in the top of the ninth inning to preserve the win. Harrington allowed just one hit over the final five innings and did not allow a McNeese runner to advance as far as third base. Blacksher (4-5) took the loss for the Cowboys. He allowed four runs on nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Danny Davis pitched one inning of relief, allowing one hit with one strikeout. |
