April 13, 2006

Box Score

BEAUMONT - Dan Hernandez and Matt Lambeth each went 2-for-4 at the place, but it was not enough as Sam Houston State posted a 6-2 win over Lamar University Thursday night in Southland Conference baseball action at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Lamar, who had its 10-game SLC winning streak snapped, dropped to 25-12 overall and 13-3 in SLC play. SHSU improved to 20-16 overall and 10-6 in SLC play. The series continues today at 6:30 p.m. and concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.

Senior William Delage, who is 7-2 with a 2.61 ERA, is expected to take the mound for Lamar. Jesse Marshall, who is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA, is the Bearkats probable starter.

SHSU scored two runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed. Clint Mann drew a one out walk and Dustin Martin followed with an RBI triple to right center field. Karl Krailo singled in Martin for a quick 2-0 lead.

The Bearkats added another run in the third inning. Jeremy Holzbach walked to lead off the inning and was balked to second base. Martin was intentionally walked with one out and Krailo followed with a single up the middle to put SHSU up 3-0.

Gregory O'Neill doubled to left center field with one out in the top of the sixth inning for the Bearkats. Matt Fry followed with a single to center field to drive in O'Neill and make the score 4-0.

Lamar squandered a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the seventh inning. C.J. Ebarb led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Lambeth fouled out to first base. Jo Jo Haney singled to left field to put runners on the corners. Colt Crawford fouled out to third base and Erik Kanaby hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

The Cardinals finally broke through for a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Collin DeLome tripled to right center field with one out. Hernandez drove DeLome in with a ground out to shortstop to make the score 4-1.

SHSU added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning. Josh Warren led off with a single up the middle. Fry reached on a throwing error by Haney at third base on a sacrifice bunt to put runners on the corners.

Adam Perry reached on a throwing error by reliever Justin Walker on a sacrifice bunt that allowed Warren to score from third. Mann doubled to right center field to drive in Fry and make the score 6-1.

Lamar rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Ebarb was hit by a pitch to lead off and Lambeth followed with a single to right field. Haney grounded out to first base to put both runners in scoring position. Crawford ground out to shortstop to drive in Ebarb and Kanaby grounded out to third base to end the game.

Tim Gray (6-1) started and picked up the win for SHSU. He allowed two runs on eight hits with two walks and one strikeout. Luke Prihoda came on in relief with two runners on and no outs to retire the next three batters to end the game.
