Kansas State Halts Lamar's Eight-Game Winning Streak, 8-7, in 10 Innings
March 3, 2007 BEAUMONT - After clawing its way back for a 7-1 deficit to send the game into extra innings tied at 7-7, Kansas State scored a run in the top of the 10th inning for an 8-7 win over Lamar University Saturday on the second day of the Lamar Classic at Vincent-Beck Stadium. Lamar dropped to 9-4 overall and Kansas State improved to 9-1 on the season. The Cardinals close out the Lamar Classic today with a 3 p.m. game against St. John's. UC-Santa Barbara plays Kansas State in today's first game at 11 a.m. Byron Wiley led off the 10th inning with a single to center field. Tyler Link, who laid down a sacrifice bunt, was able to reach safely on an error by pitcher Tim Erickson. Justin Bloxom followed with a sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position. Brett Scott drove in Wiley with the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly to center field. Lamar threatened in the bottom of the 10th inning. Jeff Vickers, who was 2-for-4, singled to left field with one out. Pinch-runner Logan Pace stole second with two outs and David Moore walked. Pinch-hitter Michael Colvin struck out to end the game. Daniel Edwards (1-0) pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for Kansas State to pick up his first win of the season. He allowed no runs on two hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Erickson (1-1) took the loss for Lamar, allowing one unearned run on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts in four innings. Kansas State struck first with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Eddie Vasquez led off the inning by reaching on a hit by pitch from Lamar starter Allen Harrington and Adam Muenster walked. Bryan Wiley followed with an RBI single to center field, which was the Wildcats first hit of the game.
Tyler Link followed by reaching on a bunt single, which loaded the bases. Justin Bloxom doubled off the center field wall to drive in Muenster and Wiley. Link scored on a wild pitch by Harrington. The Cardinals responded with a run in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Ryan Baker tripled to left center field and scored when Michael Ambort grounded into a double play. The Wildcats added two more runs in the fifth inning. Vasquez singled up the middle and scored on Wiley's double to left center field. Link followed with an RBI single to center to drive in Wiley and give K-State a 6-1 lead. Lamar rallied for four runs in the home half of the sixth inning. Kanaby, who was 1-for-4 with two runs scored, led off the inning with a bunt single, which extended his hitting streak to 18 games. Baker followed with a single to right field and DeLome was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ambort delivered a 2-run single down the left field line. DeLome scored on a balk by reliever A.J. Morris. Hernandez walked and Vickers drove in Ambort with a sacrifice fly to center field to make the score 7-5. The Cardinals pulled to within a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kanaby reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base. Baker, who was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, drove in Kanaby with a single to left field. Lamar tied the game at 7-7 with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ambort led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch from reliever Tyler Ruch. Tylor Prudhomme came on to pinch-run for Ambort and stole second base. Brian Lloyd drove in Prudhomme with a two-out single to left field. |
