Owls to Tangle with Troy

Sept. 17, 2007

KENNESAW, Ga.--The Kennesaw State volleyball squad will travel into lower Alabama for their third match in five days when they face Troy University tomorrow night. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

"Troy will be a very competitive team," said Owls head coach Valerie Jones. "They are a solid team in the serve reception and ball control aspect of the game, and they are a very balanced team offensively. I think we match-up pretty well with them, so we should have a very good match."

The Black and Gold are coming off a pair of 3-0 losses at the Jaguar Classic in Mobile, Ala. Kennesaw fell on Friday to McNeese State before dropping a decision to the host South Alabama squad.

Setter Ginny Frederick had a solid match against South Alabama, converting seven attacks for kills in 11 attempts without an error. Her .636 attack percentage was the highest for an individual Kennesaw State player since Sabrita Gulley's .706 mark in the Owls' 3-0 win over North Carolina A&T on August 24.

Lindsey Plotner continues to lead the Owls front-line blockers with a 1.02 blocks per game average. She is one of only eight athletes in the Atlantic Sun Conference to be averaging at least a block per game in 2007.

Asjia Stokes had one of her best all-around matches for the Owls on Saturday against the Jaguars. Stokes collected nine kills, six digs, and four total blocks in the three-game affair. The sophomore is now averaging 1.95 kills per game, good for fourth-best on the Owl roster.

Troy is riding a four-match winning streak. The Trojans won the championship at the Wingate Invitational hosted by Winthrop University. In a trio of 3-1 decisions, the Trojans defeated Georgetown, the host Eagles, and Mercer to win the title. Troy started their streak with a 3-1 win over Alabama State on September 10.

The Trojans have a balanced attack, with two athletes averaging over three kills per game. Jean McCarty leads Troy in total kills with 178 (3.30 per game) while Meghan Gilroy has 104 (3.47 per game).

Following the Tuesday tilt with Troy, the Owls will open Atlantic Sun Conference play when they host Belmont this Saturday. Match time at the KSU Convocation Center is set for 4:00 p.m.
