KSU Heads to A-Sun Track & Field Championships
May 11, 2007 JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The Kennesaw State track & field teams head to East Tennessee State University this weekend to participate in the 2007 Atlantic Sun Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Liberty Bell Park. As usual, the Owls will be strong in the distance events. However, this season Kennesaw State has the potential to breakthrough in other track events and have the potential to score well in the field events. On the men's side, Jerome McKinzie is the favorite in the High Jump. McKinzie put up the best mark of the season in the conference when he made a regional qualifying height of 06-10.75 / 2.10 at the Georgia Relays in Athens. His height is ahead of Gardner-Webb's Jake Didion and his 06-06.75 / 2.00m result. The Owls also have a shot in several other track events with Devin Jones facing two key races in the 110- meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. Jones has the second-best times in each event and will battle head-to-head with his top challengers. In the 110 hurdles, Jones' best time of the season came at Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla. when he finished with a 14.71, just .14 seconds behind the A-Sun's top time of 14.71, ran by Dobson Collins of Gardner-Webb. In the 400 hurdles, Jones will meet up with Harold Sims of Campbell. The Camels runner has the best time this season in the event at 52.99. Jones ran a 54.16 in the event, the conference's second-best time this season. The Kennesaw State also stand to challenge for a conference championship in the 400 Meters (Deji Famuyiwa), the 800 Meters (Matthew Auers and Scott Phillips), the Steeplechase (Nathan Haskins) and in the 4x400 Meter Relay, which could be the tightest relay event. The Owls will go head-to-head with host ETSU and if past times are any indication of the race it could be a photo-finish. The Buccaneers have the league's best time at 3:24.54, but Kennesaw State has the second best time at 3:24.57. The final of the 4x400 will be ran on Saturday evening at 7:45 p.m. On the women's side, a number of Owls have a chance for an A-Sun championship with long-distance runner Erin Sutton entering as one of the favorites in the 10,000 Meter Run. Sutton has the third best time in the conference this season, but needs her best race of the year to take down Amanda Davey of North Florida. Davey and Sutton will also battle in Saturday afternoon's 5,000 Meter Run. Sutton's best time this season is a 17:50 and she will have to run close to that time to best Davey.Catherine Combs, who had the A-Sun's fifth-best time. Kennesaw State could also makes waves in the Triple Jump where Shantela Davis has the second-best distance this season. Davis' 37-05.75/11.42m is behind only Shaquania Lundy of Jacksonville and her 39-07.00/12.07m effort. Stacie Anthony and Jacksonville's Natasha Harvey are the favorites in the Heptathlon. Harvey has the seasons top point total (4563) while Anthony has the second-best total with 4104 points.
