Records Fall For Owls at Georgia Relays

March 20, 2007

ATHENS, Ga. - It was a banner weekend for the Kennesaw State track teams as school records were broken and personal-best times and marks were set at the Georgia Relays hosted by UGA on Friday and Saturday.

The meet featured schools from around the area including Georgia, South Carolina, Georgia State and Georgia Southern, as well as some other top teams, such as the likes of Minnesota, Eastern Illinois, Vanderbilt, UT-Chattanooga and Mississippi State.

Leading the way for the Owls was freshman Jerome McKenzie, who set a new personal record of 2.10m (6'-10.75") to win the high jump. The jump bettered his previous high of 2.00m (6'-06.75") and would be a regional qualifying mark if the Owls were eligible for the NCAA Championships.

McKenzie continued his stellar weekend by shattering the school record with a leap of 13.35m (43'-09.75") to finish eighth in the triple jump.

In his first time running the event, freshman Nathan Haskins finished fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after crossing the line in 9:58.49.

Other performances of note on the men's side included Peikko Solla's second-place finish with a time of 15:18.73 in the 5,000-meter run and Aymerick Kolokilagi's performances in the hammer throw, javelin and discuss. The Atlanta native broke the school record in all three events on his way to securing three top-15 finishes.

On the women's side, senior Erin Sutton returned to action by finishing seventh in the 5,000-meter run. She recorded a time of 18:59.91 in her first race since being sidelined with a foot injury after the cross country season. Britany Reilly (19:15.12) and Catherine Combs (19:21.81) finished ninth and tenth, respectively.

Coming off a strong indoor season, freshman Soibhan Wolcott took home fifth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:56.63m while Shantela Davis finished sixth in the long jump with a mark of 5.51m (18'-01.00").

The Owls will return to the track this weekend when they travel to the Clemson Relays on Friday and Saturday.
