Hayes Captures 5000 Meters
GAINESVILLE, Florida - January 21, 2006 - Senior Patrina Hayes won the 5000 Meter Run as the Lady Owls of Kennesaw State made an impressive showing at the 2006 Gator Invitational hosted by the University of Florida.
Hayes took the event with a time of 17:26.17, just under :51 seconds ahead of runner-up, Devin Gapstur of the University of Florida. Hayes ran a 17:22.50 in the preliminaries, becoming the only competitor to crack the 18-minute mark. Also running the 5000m for KSU was Tara Mooney, who finished fourth in a season-best time of 18:25.59 and Barbara Garner, who took eighth with a time of 19:22.71. The Lady Owls also looked impressive in the 3000 meter run, as freshman Erin Sutton took sixth with a mark of 10:12.17. Other performances of notes for KSU included Shantela Davis, who finished ninth in the long jump with a mark 5.49m (18'-00.25") and Magdalena Polko's 10th place finish in the one mile run (5:15.33). In the field events, Jessica Dunn had a pair of 12th place finishes in the shot put and weight throw. The Woodstock, Georgia native, threw a distance of 10.91m (35'-09.50") in the shot and recorded a mark of 11.85m (38'-10.50") in the weight throw. The Lady Owls will be back in action this weekend when they head back to Chapel Hill, North Carolina as they prepare for the Atlantic Sun Conference Indoor Track Championships, which take place on February 17-18 in Johnson City, Tennessee.
