Powerful Offense Leads Owls to Sweep of Furman

GREENVILLE, South Carolina - March 15, 2006 - Jen Nolan was a perfect 6-for-6 with seven RBI and Jen Hunt went 7-for-8 and scored seven runs as Kennesaw State cruised to a 16-5, 13-1 doubleheader sweep of Furman Wednesday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.

The Owls (20-11) opened the two-game series with an 11-run first inning and pounded out 21 hits in the five-inning victory. Hunt and Keri McKee each collected a double and single and Cambria McKay smacked her eighth double of the season all in the first inning as KSU sent 15 batters to the plate before the close of the first frame.

Paladins' hurler Jessica Mathis was unable to retire a batter, allowing five hits and five runs in the first. The Owls totaled four doubles in the inning, including a two-out, two-run double from Nolan.

With Furman (15-15) trailing 12-1 in the third, Stephanie Cushing belted a two-run homer off of Lisa Lamb (10-3) to bring the Paladins within nine. The Owls weren't done scoring, however, as they answered with four runs in the top of the fourth, helped by Jacki Warren's two-out, two-run double down the left field line.

Megan Jaudon and Mathis delivered RBI singles to center in the bottom half of the inning for Furman for the final 16-5 margin.

Hunt finished the first game going 4-for-4 with two RBI and four runs scored while McKee went 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Warren drove in three runs and leadoff hitter Kelley Cowart collected three hits and scored three runs.

Lamb surrendered five runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings to pick up her tenth win of the season. Mathis (2-3) suffered the loss for Furman in game one, while Cushing led the Paladin offense by going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In the nightcap, KSU took advantage of two Furman errors to plate three unearned runs in the first inning en route to the 13-1 victory.

Starter Brittany Matthews (7-3) went the distance for the Owls, allowing just one run on four hits as she hurled her seventh complete game of the season. The Brooks, Georgia native struck out four while not allowing a walk in five innings of work. Hunt continued her perfect day by collecting three hits while McKee, McKay and Nolan each recorded two.

Blake Murray (2-6) took the loss for Furman after giving up nine runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings. Murray walked two batters and struck out one. Abby Robertson tripled to leadoff the third inning and scored on Amber Kiser's single to centerfield for the Lady Paladins' only run.

The Owls return home on Saturday afternoon as they open Atlantic Sun play by hosting the East Tennessee State Buccaneers. First-pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Bobbie Bailey Athletic Complex.
