Owls Claim First D-I Tourney Title
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - March 12, 2006 - In another wild affair, the Owls battled back from a 3-0 deficit to beat Birmingham Southern, 4-3, and capture the championship game of the 2006 Leigh's Athletic Ware Panther Spring Classic at BSC Field on Sunday evening.
Norie Glazebrook (1-for-4) delivered the game-winning hit with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, giving Kennesaw State its first tournament championship as a Division I program. "I'm glad that we got this tournament victory today," said head coach Scott Whitlock. "We've been close a couple of times this year and today we should a great dela of character and I'm very happy for them." With one out Jennifer Nolan (3-for-4) doubled to left field and after Jacki Warren lined sharply to shortstop for the second out of the inning, Glazebrook stepped up and delivered the biggest hit of her collegiate career, a single through the left side of the infield. Kennesaw State (18-11) trailed 3-0 heading into the top of the fifth when they chipped away at BSC starter Kristina Villavincencio for a run. Amanda Malcom (2-for-4) singled to left field and April Keasler (1-for-2) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second, Jen Hunt followed with a hit to load the bases before a Keri McKee (0-for-4) groundout gave KSU their first run of the day. Kennesaw State tied the game in the top of the sixth inning when they loaded the bases after a hit by Nolan, one of three hits on the day for the KSU third baseman, a walk to Warren and after Glazebrook reached on an error. Keasler then followed with a single to center field scoring Nolan and Warren and tying the game at three. While the Kennesaw State bats were warming up, Andrea Moss who had relieved Kennesaw State starter Brittany Matthews, was in the process of shutting down the Birmingham Southern (17-5) bats. Moss, who entered the game with two outs in the fourth inning, was perfect over the final 3.1 innings. The first-year Owl did not allow a hit or a walk while striking out half of the ten batters she faced in picking up her first win of the year. "Andrea was just pitching old-fashioned, hard ball," smiled Whitlock. "I was very proud of her effort today." Four Kennesaw State players were named to the All-Tournament team, catcher Cambria McKay, left fielder April Keasler, center fielder Jen Hunt and right fielder Kelley Cowart. The Owls will be back in action on Wednesday, March 15, when they travel to South Carolina to play Furman at 2:30 p.m. |
