Cowart, McKay Set Mark
KENNESAW, Georgia - March 4, 2006 - It was a day of ups and downs for Kennesaw State as the Owls split a pair of games against UNC Greensboro and Oakland at the Charleston Southern Tournament on Saturday morning.
It was a record-breaking day in the opener for the Owls. For the first-time in the storied history of KSU softball, two players homered twice in the Owls 8-0 win. Cambria McKay and Kelley Cowart each hit two home runs. Cowart and McKee hit solo home runs in the first inning and then the pair hit two-run homers in the top of the sixth inning. Cowart finished the day with four runs batted in while McKay drove in three runs. Brittany Matthews (3-2) picked up the win, allowing two hits over six innings. The sophomore struck out five batters and walked one, ending her streak of double-digit strikeout games at three. Andrea Moss came in and pitched the final inning. Keri McKee had two hits in the game and improved her team leading hitting streak to 17 games. McKee was hitless in her first three at-bats before hitting singles in the sixth and seventh innings. In the Owls second game, a four-run fourth inning was too much for Kennesaw State to overcome as the Owls fell to Oakland, 4-1. Kennesaw State (10-8) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when McKee singled home Jen Hunt. McKee would add another hit in the game, pushing her hitting streak to 18 games. Hunt, who had two hits in the first game, would have her first multi-hit games since getting back into the lineup after getting injured in practice last month. Norie Glazebrook cruised through the first three innings before running into problems in the fourth inning. Camie Knorr singled to right field to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice moved her second, Lindsey Frederick singled to left field to tie the game. Lisa Colores then homered to left center to make the score 3-1, another hit prompted Glazebrook's exit. The freshman fell to 1-3 as Moss issued a walk and a run scoring single to Caitlyn Lynch. The Owls finished pool play with a 3-1 record and will play the winner of Northern Colorado and Oakland in the single elimination bracket beginning on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. |
