Phillips Propels Owls to 2-1 Overtime Win
Sept. 9, 2007 KENNESAW, Ga. - Senior Annie Phillips scored two goals, including the game-winner just 28 seconds into overtime to propel Kennesaw State to a, 2-1, overtime win over Wofford on Sunday afternoon at the KSU Soccer Complex. After battling for 90 minutes without breaking a 1-1 tie, KSU (2-2) took little time exerting its strength against the smaller Terriers. Sara Clapham sent a low line drive into the 18-yard box where Phillips rushed in, dove, and connected on a header to send the ball to the lower right corner to give the Owls their second straight win. "This was a good win for us after a hard-fought match on Friday night against Alabama," said head coach Rob King. "We made it tough on ourselves, but we came away with the result we were looking for." The Owls took an early lead in the 16th minute when Phillips scored the first of her two goals, receiving a long through ball from Caitlin Dingle. Once gathering it under control, the Savannah, Ga. native was left all alone against Wofford's keeper, Katie McChesney, and sent a laser into the bottom right corner. Wofford (3-1) held tough in the first stanza, in large part to the play of McChesney. The Terriers' goalie made eight crucial saves in the first half, including three one-on-one chances, twice thwarting Phillips. The Terriers looked like the better team for much of the second half after making key adjustments at halftime, and knotted the game at 1-1 when Whitney Steelamn scored her second goal of the season off a pass from Natalie Ferrara, which she quickly directed past a diving Katie Piotrowski into the lower left portion of the goal. Wofford nearly took the lead in the 66th minute when Rachel Hyatt's shot rang off the crossbar, but lucky for the Owls' faithful, the ball fell harmlessly out of bounds. Piotrowski looked strong in net for KSU as she recorded six saves to earn her second collegiate victory. McChesney finished with 11 saves on the afternoon for the Terriers. Kennesaw State out-shot Wofford, 22-10, and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Owls will return to action on Friday night when they travel to take on the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. Kick-off is sechduled for 8:00 p.m. (ET) in Jacksonville, Ala. |
