C....H...A...M...P...S Owls Take Peach Belt Crown
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Columbus, Georgia- After years of knocking at the Peach Belt Conference door, the Owls cheer team broke it down with a barrage of perfection as Kennesaw State captured it's first ever Peach Belt Conference Championship Saturday morning at the Lumpkin Center.
The victory by Kennesaw State's all-girl squad made the Owls the first all-girl team to win a Peach Belt Conference championship. The Owls also snapped Columbus State's four-year championship streak. "We hit it today," said head coach Felicia Ingle on her team's perfect routine. "This is a great payoff for all of the hard work that our girls put into this program." From the outset the atmosphere was building towards a special day for Kennesaw State. With the Owls warming up prior to hitting the mat, the growing Lumpkin Center crowd was filled with chants of the Owls K...S...U chant. "We didn't have our sights set on winning," added Ingle on her team's preparation. "We just wanted to be satisfied with our performance on the floor and I figured the rest would take care of itself." From the first toss and tumble the Owls owned the mat. Over the next three minutes, the composed Kennesaw State team captivated the invigorated crowd before ending the routine to a deafening roar. "I wasn't really nervous", said freshman Heather Cochran, who was competing in her first collegiate event. "I was just ready to do what we have been practicing for nine months." Waiting for the defending champions was the hardest part of the morning for the Owls. "We didn't care what place we got, we were 100 percent happy with our performance," said Kim Bailey. "We thought we set a pretty high standard for the rest of the conference teams." Columbus State, who would have needed a perfect routine to overtake the Owls, sealed their second place finish with a late drop in their routine. "The best part of the day was being a part of the only all-girl squad in the competition, added Cochran. The Owls now set their sights on the NCA National Championships in Daytona Beach, Florida on April 2-6. |
