The Ron Walker Memorial Classic-Day Two Results
Kennesaw, GA - The second day of the 10th Annual Ron Walker Memorial Classic saw the host Lady Owls rebound with a victory and Peach Belt Conference counterpart GC&SU win it's second game as the two-day event held at the Spec Landrum Centre on the campus of Kennesaw State University concluded.
Latia Love connected on three free-throws in the final 53 seconds as the Lady Bobcats (4-0) once again overcame poor shooting as they downed the Lady Panthers 60-58. Tournament Most Valuable Player Renea Phelps scored a game-high 20 points as GC&SU held off a second half rally for their fourth consecutive win of the year. GC&SU held a 12-point advantage with just under four minutes left to play before Virginia Union rallied. Shannell Roberts hit a three-pointer and a lay-up to trim the lead to six points and Pria Stellmacher delivered the next four points to make the score 57-55. A pair of free-throws by Love built the GC&SU lead to four-points before the Lady Panthers LaToya Green hit a three-pointer to make it a one-point game with 18 seconds left. GC&SU shot only 29 percent from the floor, but out-muscled Virginia Union (2-2) 51-38 on the glass including an eye-popping 22-10 on the offensive glass. In the final game of the classic, Kennesaw State overcame a 20-point performance by Cassie King and came-from-behind to defeat North Carolina Central 68-60. The Lady Owls (4-1) received 18 points from an inspired Leslie Smith and 13 points each from Shavonder Clarke and Nikki Gurley. Kennesaw State had a 47-30 lead with just over two minutes left in the first half before the Lady Eagles (3-2) made a charge. North Carolina Central scored the final five points of the first half and began the second half with a 10-2 run to make the score 49-45 with 14:03 left to play in the game. The Lady Eagles would take their first lead of the second half when King hit a short jumper to give NC Central a 53-52 lead. Shavonder Clarke and Lauren Harris hit back-to-back buckets to build the Lady Owls lead to three-points , but the Lady Eagles took another lead when Maris Parker hit a jumper to give Central it's final lead of the night. Leslie Smith tied the game quickly with basket and seconds later, Malgorzata Morka broke the tie with a three-pointer. Five free-throws over the final minute secured the win for Kennesaw State. The two-day classic saw GC&SU finish with a 2-0 record, Kennesaw State and Virginia Union each split two games and North Carolina Central was winless. Tournament MVP- All-Tournament Team- |
