Soarin' Lauren...Freshman Sparks Lady Owls

AUGUSTA, Georgia - Lady Owls freshman Lauren Harris came into her own last night as she hit the game winning shot with 13 seconds left and then blocked the potential game-winner by Francis Marion in the final two seconds as Kennesaw State advanced to the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament with a 70-69 win on Tuesday at the Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The Columbia, Missouri rookie hit a ten-foot jumper from the corner to complete a 15-point comeback and then blocked Shonelle Downer's lay up attempt at the game winner with less than two seconds as the Kennesaw State celebtrated it's largest comeback in post season history.

The Owls (17-11), whose only other lead of the game was 5-4 at the 18:14 mark, trailed by eleven points, 65-54, with 8:14 remaining before closing out the game on a 16-4 run. Junior Dominika Mieszkowska, who played one of her best defensive games of the season, hit a three-pointer with 49 seconds left to pull the Lady Owls to within one point at 69-68.

On the following possession, Francis Marion (11-17) had a chance to push the game to three points as Danielle Moore was fouled. However, she missed both free-throws, setting up the Harris' game-winner.

Francis Marion the game throughout, taking it's first lead of the game on a Brittany Young lay up with 17 minutes remaining in the first half. That was the beginning of a 20-4 run which saw the Patriots go up 24-9 with 8:08 left in the half. Downer capped the run with a short jumper.

Kennesaw State responded with a 14-2 run to get the margin to just 26-23 with 3:53 left. The Lady Owls cut the lead down to two points on three occasions and twice cut the lead to three points as they constantly prevented FMU from putting together the big rally.

"We did a good job of fighting back," said head coach Colby Tilley. "We did an outstanding job of fighting through adversity, time after time."

FMU got the margin back to nine points by scoring six unanswered points and would lead 34-29 at the half.

Kennesaw State got as close as two points in the first four minutes of the second half, pulling to 42-40 with 16:11 to play on a Shavonder Clarke jumper. The Patriots responded with a 19-7 run to lead by 12 at 61-49 with 10:12 to play. FMU would score just three more field goals the rest of the way.

er Clarke led all scorers with 26 points on 7-17 shooting from the floor and 9-10 from the free-throw line. Harris added 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots.

Danielle Moore led FMU (11-17) with 19 points, while Brittany Young chipped in a career-high 18 for the Patriots. Shonelle Downer added a career-high 12 points, while Michelle Ghere added 10.
