Lady Owls Clawed at Home

KENNESAW, Ga. - Nearly everything went according to plan for Kennesaw State. The one exception was a big one as Lander completely dominated the boards in an 89-81 win over Kennesaw State at the Spec Landrum Centre on Saturday afternoon.

The usually physical Lady Owls were decimated on the glass by the duo of Jacquay White (9-for-13, 23 points) and Natasha Hemphill (4-for-14, 12 points). The twosome each posted a double-double and combined for 35 points and 23 rebounds. On the day, Lander out rebounded Kennesaw State 57-32 and 25-10 on the offensive glass.

The furious paced game saw both teams shot over 40 percent from both the field and the three-point arc. Lander (10-10, 5-5 Peach Belt) shot 45 percent from the floor compared to 42 percent for KSU while the Lady Owls (11-9, 3-6) drained 54 percent of their shots from three-point range to 44 percent for the Lady Bearcats.

The Lady Owls led 69-68 after Stephanie Scearce's lay up with 8:35 left. However, Tracey Jacobs (7-for-12, 18 points) sandwiched three-pointers around White's short jumper to cap an 8-0 run over a minute and a half span and never looked back.

Kennesaw State began strong as they connected on three consecutive treys to begin the game. Malgorzata Morka (4-for-9, 13 points) hit two three-pointers in the first thirty-seconds and scored nine of KSU first 14 points as the Lady Owls cruised to a 14-2 lead less than two minutes into the game.

Lander chipped away at the KSU lead and took it's first lead of the game 47-44 with 1:02 left.

The Lady Bearcats received another three-pointer just before halftime as Ashley Johnson (2-for-10, 6 points) hurled a desperation shot as the shot clock expired. However, a bench technical was called for six-men on the court as the Lady Bearcat bench erupted. Morka hit both free-throws and Dominika Mieszkowska (4-for-11, 11 points) hit a three-pointer before halftime to make the score 50-49.

Kennesaw State's Shavonder Clarke was the game's high scorer as she poured in 27 points on 9-for-18 shooting. Danielle Bates scored 11 points and Stephanie Scearce added 10 points.

The Lady Owls will be back in action on Monday evening when they travel to USC Aiken to play a makeup game against the Lady Pacers. KSU is back home on Wednesday night to play local rival Clayton State at 5:30 p.m.
