Lady Braves Too Much for KSU... Pair of Big Runs Doom Owls
Carrollton, GA - The Lady Owls had one of their best shooting nights of the season, controlled the boards on both the offensive and defensive end and committed less fouls than West Georgia. So it was surprising that the Lady Owls dropped a 73-60 decision to the Lady Braves on Wednesday evening at the HPE Building.
Shavonder Clarke (7-for-14) and Stephanie Scearce (6-for-7) combined for 27 points, but it wasn't enough for Kennesaw State (4-2) as a lack of clutch shooting, poor free-throw shooting and a pair of West Georgia scoring bursts helped the Lady Owls lose it's second game of the season. The Lady Owls led early, taking a 12-7 lead after Malgorzata Morka drained a three-pointer to give KSU it's biggest lead of the night. The usually sharp-shooting Morka would then miss her next five shots as she finished the night shooting just 3-for-11 from the field. Unfortunately for Kennesaw State, a pair of quick scoring runs in both the first half and second half resulted in a 22-1 total that helped West Georgia (4-2) put away their state rivals. After Morka's three-pointer, the Lady Owls went nearly seven minutes without a point as West Georgia went on a 9-0 run. KSU was able to keep hang around in the final five minutes of the first half as they fought to keep within striking distance of the Lady Braves. Six times, Kennesaw State was able to stay within three points but a three-point play by Tabatha Washington pushed the lead to six points before Leslie Smith made a free-throw to cut the lead to five points. Smith made just one of six free-throws on the night. The second half began with a three-pointer by Nikki Blakely (2-for-9, 5 points) and the Lady Braves built it's lead to ten points with 13:27 left in the game. Morka, Clarke and Lauren Harris each connected on baskets over the following three minutes and the Lady Owls were able to trim the lead to 44-40 with 10:25 remaining to play. That was the closest Kennesaw State would come to the Lady Braves as West Georgia responded with a 13-1 run to put the game out of reach, taking a 57-41 lead with seven and one-half minutes to play. the Lady Braves' Milan Cary scored a game-high 25 points on 10-for-18 shooting while teammate Natasha Liggins added 19 points with a 7-for-12 night. Kennesaw State continues its brief two-game road trip when they play the Lady Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday evening at 7:00 pm central standard time. |
