Waters Takes Second at A-Sun Championships

JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee - February 17, 2006 - After day one of competition at the 2006 Atlantic Sun Indoor Track and Field Championships, the Kennesaw State men's team finds itself in fourth place with 22 points.

Gardner-Webb leads the meet with 44 points, while Campbell (39) and East Tennessee State (33) are just behind. Trailing the Owls in fifth place is Belmont, with 15 points, while Lipscomb is sixth with two.

Pacing the Owls on day one was Jason Waters, who took second place in the 3,000-meter run. His time of 8:45.08 was just a second and a half behind winner Jeff Crane (8:43.69) of East Tennessee State.

Joseph Mutai also scored points for the Owls in the 3-K, finishing fourth in a time of 8:48.03. Daniel Gormley (8:52.35) just missed scoring, as he claimed seventh-place honors, while Maxwell Ndungu took 15th with a time of 9:25.42.

Other highlights for the Owls on day one included Mark Deroux's sixth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.34m (20'-09.75") and Aymerick Kolokilagi's sixth-place mark of 12.65m (41'-06.00") in the shot put.

KSU will look to climb closer to the top in the final day of competition tomorrow when the 35-lb. weight throw will begin the action at 9:00 a.m.
