Owls Get First Division I Win
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - November 19, 2005 - The artic chill of Alaska couldn't keep the Owls from getting hot as Kennesaw State won its first Division I game by trouncing Lamar 79-60 in the BP Top of the World Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Owls (1-1) shot 55 percent from the floor and from three-point range as they dominated the Cardinals (0-2) from the outset. Ronell Wooten scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead a quartet of Owls who scored in double-figures. Golden Ingle, who scored 29 points in Friday night's game, added 16 points and five assists while Brent Ragsdale added 11 points and Israel Ingle dropped in ten points. Kennesaw State came out strong and jumped to an 11-4 lead with just over 15 minutes left in the first half after Golden Ingle was fouled after successfully converting a lay-up and a free-throw. The Owls pushed their lead on first-half three-pointers by Ryan Nelson (2-for-4, 8 points), Ragsdale (5-for-8) and Gabby Cruz (3-for-7, 7 points) as the Owls built a 37-23 lead at halftime. Kennesaw State shot 50 percent from the field and three-point range in the first half and a blistering 62 percent from the field in the second half. In the second half, the Cardinals were only able to briefly cut into the Kennesaw State lead, trimming the deficit to nine points on two occasions early in the half. An 18-8 run over the next eight minutes was capped off by Golden Ingle's third three-pointer of the game as the Owls built a 62-43 lead with 6:22 remaining. The Owls would build their lead to 27 points twice with less than three minutes left before coasting to the win. The Cardinals, from the Southland Conference and who are coached by former Oklahoma Sooners head coach Billy Tubbs, were 18-11 last season and were defeated by Southern Mississippi by three points in Friday night's opening game. Josh Godwin and Nashid Beard led Lamar with 18 points. The Owls will conclude the tournament on Sunday evening when they will play the winner of Alaska-Fairbanks and Montana State in the fourth place game. |
