Sunny Season for Owls

Kennesaw State's first season in the Atlantic Sun Conference was a successful one, as the Owls wasted no time in making an impact across the league. A conference championship, three conference runner-up finishes and nearly 40 student-athletes honored by the league highlighted KSU's first season as a Division I program. Beginning in the fall, Kennesaw State got off to a quick start, literally and figuratively, as they claimed the first A-Sun title in school history, winning the women's cross country championship. Senior Patrina Hayes and freshman Erin Sutton led the Owls, finishing second and fourth respectively, as the black and gold knocked off four?time reigning champion Belmont by 52 points. Also in the fall, the women's soccer team continued to build upon its Division II success as they finished second in the league. Seniors Katrina Hirsch and Jessica Marek were named Co-Defensive Players of the Year as the Owls registered 11 shutouts while posting a 13-4-1 mark. In the winter, the story was head coach Tony Ingle and the men's basketball program. Kennesaw State soared into the media spotlight after going 9-1 to begin the conference schedule. In the top 100 in RPI rankings for the better part of the season, the Owls strongly vied for the regular season title and a possible NIT bid until late season injuries took KSU out of the title hunt. Freshman Andre Morgan was named the Freshman of the Year while Golden Ingle and Ronell Wooten established themselves as two of the top players in the region. Competing in their first season, the indoor track teams both finished fourth with the Owls receiving 25 all-conference honors. In the spring, the spotlight was once again of the softball team. The Owls finished 15-5 in the league and was just one game behind Stetson for the conference regular season crown. Six all-conference selections helped the Owls to a 38-17 record while head coach Scott Whitlock was named the A-Sun Co-Coach of the Year. Not to be outdone, the men's outdoor track team and their 12 all-conference performers, gave Kennesaw State its third conference runner-up finish as they placed second at the A-Sun championships. Head coach Mike Sansing and the Owls baseball team did not shy away from Division I powerhouses as their schedule included seven teams who advanced to the national tournament and two teams, Georgia and Georgia Tech, who advanced to the college World Series. The competitive cheer team, back-to-back Division II National Champions, competed as a Division I program for the first time and finished in third place at the NCA Cheer Championships in Daytona Beach in April. Players of the Year< b> It didn't take long for Kennesaw State individuals to make their mark on the Atlantic Sun Conference. Known for having top-notch student-athletes, the Owls once again showed their strength as a pair of soccer players were named as the top defenders in the league. Defender Katrina Hirsch and goalkeeper Jessica Marek were named the Co-Defensive Players of the Year in the A-Sun. Hirsch also received recognition on the regional level as she was named an NSCAA Third Team All-Southeast Region selection. Top Freshmen< b> In the Owls inaugural season in Division I and the A-Sun, it was only fitting that KSU had a number of individuals shine in their debut as college athletes. Two student-athletes established the mark for freshman success last season as men's basketball's Andre Morgan and women's cross-country runner Erin Sutton each claimed Freshman of the Year honors. The league honored Morgan, who averaged 12.8 points and 15.1 points in the conference, after moving quickly into the starting lineup and starting in 24 of 29 games. Sutton garnered her accolades after scorching the field by finishing fourth overall and soundly defeating all freshman runners in the A-Sun championships. Daniel Gormley had an impressive first-year as was honored by the league with All-Freshman team honors in cross-country. Beth Meadors was an All-Freshman team selection in women's soccer. Pitcher Justin Freeman and shortstop Jacob Robbins were honored as top freshman baseball players. All-Conference Performers< b> Kennesaw State had 34 all-conference performers in 11 sports last season including 28 first team selections. The Owls five team sports produced 13 selections with women's soccer and softball leading the way with six apiece. The softball team had four first team selections in Kelley Cowart, Keri McKee, Cambria McKay and Jennifer Nolan. The women's soccer squad had three first team picks in Jenae Gzehoviak, Katrina Hirsch and Laura Tucker. Pip Meo, Jessica Marek and Stephanie Grzeszkowiak were third team picks while softball's Lisa Lamb and Brittany Matthews were second team picks. Shavonder Clarke was the only basketball player to earn all-conference honors with a second team selection. Atlantic Sun Conference Awards and Accolades for 2005-06< b> Conference Championships< b> Women's Cross Country Defensive Players of the Year< b> Jessica Marek and Katrina Hirsch, Soccer Freshman of the Year< b> Andre Morgan, Men's Basketball and Erin Sutton, Cross Country All-Conference< b> Cross Country-Women< b> Patrina Hayes, Magdalena Polko, Erin Sutton, Cross Country-Men< b> Jason Waters Women's Soccer< b> Katrina Hirsch, Jenae Gzehoviak, Laura Tucker, Pip Meo (2nd Team), Stephanie Grzeszkowiak (2nd Team), Jessica Marek (2nd Team) Indoor Track-Women's< b> Patrina Hayes, Erin Sutton, Magdalena Polko, Shantela Davis, Lani Hammond Indoor Track-Men< b> Joseph Mutai, Lukasz Skrzypiec, Scott Phillips, Jason Waters, Daniel Gormley, Devin Jones, Matthew Coy, Uchenna Emejulu, Ben Gray, Mark Deroux, David Shields Women's Basketball< b> Shavonder Clarke (2nd Team) Softball< b> Keri McKee, Cambria McKay, Jennifer Nolan, Kelley Cowart, Lisa Lamb (2nd Team), Brittany Matthews (2nd Team) Outdoor Track-Women< b> Patrina Hayes, Erin Sutton, Shantela Davis Outdoor Track-Men< b> Joseph Mutai, Lukasz Skrzypiec, Jason Waters, Daniel Gormley, Devin Jones, Uchenna Emejulu, Ben Gray, Mark Deroux, Aymerick Kolokilagi All-Freshman Team< b> Daniel Gormley, Cross Country; Andre Morgan, Men's Basketball; Beth Meadors, Soccer; Justin Freeman, Baseball, Jacob Robbins, Baseball Coach of the Year< b> Scott Whitlock, Softball
