A Look Back and a Look Ahead at Blue Jay Volleyball:
A Look Back at the Previous Week:
Hopkins went 2-0 last week picking up a 3-1 win over Gettysburg at home on Wednesday night and a 3-0 victory at Swarthmore on Saturday.
In the win over Gettysburg, the Blue Jays jumped out to the early lead grabbing games one and two by scores of 30-23. The Bullets claimed game three before the Blue Jays roared back to win game four and the match. Sophomore Allison Cappelaere had a double-double while senior Natalia Fijalkowski hit .407 with 12 kills.
In the win over Swarthmore, Head coach Scott Pennewill tied the school record for victories with his 98th. Junior Amanda Lewis moved closer to the career assists record with 30 helpers.
Scouting the Week Ahead:
Hopkins has just one match on the schedule this week. The Blue Jays travel to Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday night to take on the Diplomats. The Diplomats lead the all-time series with the Blue Jays 20-9 including wins in the last two meetings. Last year when the two squad meet, Hopkins pushed the match to a fifth game before falling 3-2.
Approaching a Coaching Milestone:
Blue Jay head coach Scott Pennewill is currently tied for the most coaching victories in program history. Pennewill recorded his 98th victory at Hopkins with the 3-0 win over Swarthmore. He is tied with Heidi Mass who recorded 98 victories between 1993-1997. Pennewill recorded his number in a shorter amount of time as Mass was 98-78 in 176 matches and Pennewill is 98-42 in 140 matches. He would also become the 13th active coach at Hopkins to hold the program record for career wins.
Lending a Helping Hand or Ball:
With her 30 assists against Swarthmore, junior Amanda Lewis inched even closer to the JHU career assists mark. Lewis enters this week's play needing 14 assists to tie the mark. She has 3,488 while the current record is 3,502 set by Betsy Baydala.
A Look at the Centennial Standings:
With just five matches remaining on the Hopkins volleyball schedule, the race for a spot in the Centennial Conference Tournament is heating up. Haverford and McDaniel are currently tied for first with 5-0 records. The Blue Jays lost to Haverford and have yet to play McDaniel. Hopkins sits third with a 4-1 conference record entering this week. Gettysburg and Dickinson are tied with 3-1 marks in the league, both of those teams were dealt their loss by Hopkins. Franklin & Marshall has a 3-2 league record while Swarthmore is currently 2-3. The Blue Jays play the Diplomats on Wednesday and defeated Swarthmore last week.
I'm Honored:
Sophomore outside hitter Allison Cappelaere was named to the Centennial Conference Honor Roll on Tuesday afternoon. Cappelaere helped lead the Blue Jays to a pair of big wins as she posted a double-double in both matches last week. For the week she had 25 kills, 11 service aces and 23 digs. Her kills and digs were tied for the team-high for the week. Cappelaere averaged 3.57 kills per game and 3.29 digs per game while hitting .178.
Still Streaking:
Hopkins posted a 3-1 victory over Gettysburg last week. With the victory the Blue Jays improved to 7-0 at home this season including 3-0 in Centennial Conference play. Dating back to last season, Hopkins has won nine straight matches amidst the friendly confines of Goldfarb. Hopkins is 44-10 at home under Head coach Scott Pennewill. Hopkins will next get to test this streak on October 20 against Bryn Mawr.
Stacking Up in the Centennial Stats:
