Oct. 7, 2002

Last Week: Hopkins was 3-0 last week as the Blue Jays defeated Haverford, Swarthmore, and Muhlenberg in Centennial Conference action. JHU opened the week with a 3-1 win against Haverford at home, then swept the Centennial tri-match against Swarthmore (3-0) and Muhlenberg (3-2) in Allentown, PA. JHU is now 12-14 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

This Week: The Blue Jays open this week Wednesday as JHU hosts Bryn Mawr in a Centennial match at 7:00 p.m. Hopkins then competes at the Gallaudet Tournament in Washington, D.C. Friday and Saturday.

The Coach: Head coach Chris Weidenborner is in his fourth season at Hopkins after a very successful first three seasons. He led JHU to a 67-41 record the last three years with three ECAC Tournament appearances. Weidenborner sports a 79-55 (.589 winning percentage) overall record with the Blue Jays. He is a graduate of the State University of New York (SUNY) at Brockport, where he enjoyed a three-year career as the team's captain and starting left-side hitter.

Team & Player Notes:

*Balanced Attack: The Blue Jays have displayed a balanced offensive attack this season as four players are averaging 2.10 kills per game or better, and five players have over 100 kills. Stephanie Kaliades leads the team with 341 kills and 3.62 kills per game, while Elisabeth Breese, and Samantha Raggi rank second and third in kills per game with 2.43 and 2.40, respectively. Jen Hajj is fourth (2.12), while Betsy Baydala has added 101 kills on the year. The Blue Jays are averaging 12.50 kills per game after totaling 11.56 per game last season.

*Strength in Numbers: Through 26 matches, all 16 players have seen action, while 14 Blue Jays have played in 11 or more matches. Nine players have collected at least 50 digs, while 10 players have totaled 35 or more kills. For the entire 2001 season, eight players recorded double digit kills.

*Fast Start: With a 3-0 record in Centennial Conference matches, the Blue Jays are off to the best conference start in school history. JHU defeated Haverford and Muhlenberg, who both were in the Centennial playoffs a year ago, and added a win over Swarthmore. Hopkins' next four CC matches are against Bryn Mawr (10/9), Washington College (10/16), Dickinson (10/19), and Ursinus (10/19). Those four schools are a combined 1-10 in conference play this season and were a combined 7-33 last season.

* Breese Climbs Charts: Senior middle hitter Elisabeth Breese tallied 32 kills last week to move into fifth place at Hopkins with 861 career kills. She needs just 17 kills to move into third place. Breese also ranks fifth at JHU in career blocks with 304. Breese has totaled three or more blocks in 13 matches this season, including a season-high nine versus Eastern on September 28. She leads the team with 78 blocks and is second with 238 kills.

* Baydala Continues Strong Play: Sophomore Betsy Baydala has collected double-digit digs in all but seven matches this season. With 43 digs last week, Baydala moved into 10th place at Hopkins with 725 career digs. She moved back to the setter position over the last nine matches and has performed very well. Baydala recorded a season-high 49 assists in JHU's win over the College of Notre Dame on September 24, and has averaged 8.61 assists per game in JHU's last nine matches. She leads the team in digs (318), and is second in digs per game (3.21), and assists (411).

* Cromwell Switches to Libero: After starting the first 17 matches at setter, senior Courtney Cromwell has played her last seven matches at libero and continued her solid play. She has totaled 78 digs in her last seven matches and currently ranks third on the team with 206 digs. Cromwell, who ranks second at Hopkins with 2,628 career assists, also leads the team in assists (511) and assists per game (5.87).

* Quick Notes:

~ Freshman Colby Perkins continues to lead the team in digs per game (3.59) and is second in total digs (313). If she maintains her current pace, her digs per game average will be the third highest in school history.

~ After missing the first 14 matches due to injury, junior Samantha Raggi has been a welcome addition to the squad. She is averaging 2.40 kills per game and has added 28 blocks. As a freshman in 2000, Raggi ranked third on the team with 222 kills and led Hopkins with 75 blocks.

~ Junior Stephanie Kaliades has tallied double-digit kills in a team-best 18 matches this season, while Elisabeth Breese is second with 12 and freshman Jen Hajj is third with nine. Last season, Breese collected double-digit kills in 19 matches to rank second on the team.

~ Kaliades has totaled 92 digs in JHU's last five matches for an average 4.84 kills per game. In three Centennial matches, she has registered a team-high 53 kills with a .306 hitting percentage.
