Volleyball Weekly Report: Re-Writing the Record Book
Complete Release in PDF Format Oct. 4, 2005 On a day when seniors Katie O'Callaghan and Jen Hajj were honored for achieving 1,000 career kills, junior Lizzie Kay made another dent of her own in the Johns Hopkins volleyball record book. The Blue Jay libero, who already owns single-season records for digs (and looking to establish another season record in 2005), is now the school's all-time leader in digs. She passed Betsy Baydala, who registered 1,627 of her own from 2001-04. This season, Kay could conceivably reach 700 digs, passing the single-season record she established in 2004 at 640. Also, if she can continue on her pace, she could reach 2,000 career digs in 2005. With the defensive proficency of Kay, she can continue to climb the ladder not only in 2005, but for the remainder of her Hopkins career. If Kay can add to her career totals next year, she has a chance to finish in the NCAA Division III career top ten. Only time will tell if Kay can get that far, but she, like the rest of this 2005 team, has already made their collective impact on the program and its records. In other notes from the week in volleyball:
Milestone watch:
The Blue Jays dropped their 26th match in 29 tries to the Bullets of Gettysburg, who reeled off a three-game sweep of the Blue Jays last Wednesday. Hopkins' last win against the eight-time conference champions came on Oct. 17, 2001 at home, in a 3-2 final. Freshman Amanda Lewis has 40 or more assists in 16 of 19 matches this season, and has 917 on the season. She needs 271 more to match Michelle Dumler's 1997 record of 1,188 in a season. Currently, she averages 12.92 assists per game, which would also be a Hopkins single-season record, if she maintains her pace. |
