A Look Back and a Look Ahead at Blue Jay Volleyball:

Battlefield Classic Leaves Blue Jays 1-3 for the Weekend:

The second weekend of the 2006 season saw the Blue Jays' volleyball team traveling to Gettysburg to take part in the Battlefield Classic. The first match of the night saw Hopkins fall to Elizabethtown by a 3-0 score. Freshman Allison Cappelaere led the way with 12 kills while sophomore Amanda Lewis notched 25 assists. The second match of the night saw the Blue Jays bounce back and defeat Richard Stockton 3-2. In that match, Cappelaere hit her way to a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. Lewis posted 60 assists while senior Lizzie Kay pulled out 26 digs and sophomore Kim Jackanich was a close second in that category with 21 digs.

Day two of the Battlefield Classic dawned with the Blue Jays looking to right the ship and come away with a couple wins. It was just not meant to be on this day for Hopkins as Salisbury upended the Blue Jays 3-0 and Scranton posted an identical score in the second match of the day. In the Salisbury match, Cappelaere posted 17 kills, Lewis had 21 assists and freshman Katie Buckheit posted 12 digs. The Scranton match saw Jackanich and fellow sophomore Adrienne Young lead the team with 10 kills apiece while Lewis had 23 assists and Buckheit posted 11 digs.

Cappelaere was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts over the weekend. This was the second straight weekend that Cappelaere earned all-tournament honors in her young Blue Jay career.

Gauging the Gators and Gophers:

Next up for the Blue Jays is the Maryland D-III State Tournament on Friday and Saturday. This year's tournament is being hosted by St. Mary's College after last year when the tournament was held at Hopkins. The Blue Jays will be looking to defend their Maryland D-III State Tournament title and to do that, they are going to have to get through the College of Notre Dame and Goucher on Friday night.

Hopkins last played Notre Dame in last year's Maryland D-III Tournament, defeating the Gators by a 3-0 score. Hopkins holds a 22-2 record lifetime against Notre Dame with the Gators last win over the Blue Jays coming back in the 1985 season.

Goucher and Hopkins played twice last season, once in the season opener and then again in the Maryland D-III Tournament. The Blue Jays defeated the Gophers both times by a 3-0 score. Hopkins holds a 20-8 lifetime record versus Goucher with the Gophers last win over the Blue Jays coming in 1998.

Hopkins will play two more games in the Maryland D-III Tournament on Saturday. The Blue Jays opponents for those two games will depend on the outcome of pool play on Friday.
