BALTIMORE, MD - Junior Stephanie Kaliades (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) tallied a team-high 18 kills and added 11 digs to lead the Johns Hopkins volleyball team to a 3-1 (30-27, 30-26, 26-30, 32-30) win over Haverford tonight in JHU's Centennial Conference opener. The Blue Jays improved to 10-14 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Fords fell to 10-8 overall and 3-2 in CC play.

JHU, which improved to 17-4 in Centennial matches since the start of the 2000 season, opened the match by winning the first two games, 30-27 and 30-26. Haverford fought back to take the third game, 30-26 and pushed Hopkins to the limit in an exciting fourth game. The Blue Jays began the fourth game on a 6-0 run and eventually took a 13-4 lead. The Fords fought back and grabbed a 28-26 lead, before JHU regained the lead at 29-28. Following two points by Haverford, the Blue Jays rallied for the final three points to take the match.

Junior Samantha Raggi (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) added 10 kills and two blocks for Hopkins, while senior Elisabeth Breese (Geneva, NY/Geneva) tallied nine kills and a team-high eight blocks. Sophomore Betsy Baydala (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side) led the Blue Jay defense with 23 digs and also totaled 34 assists. Senior Courtney Cromwell (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) chipped in with 16 digs.

With her 18 kills, Kaliades became just the third player in school history to record over 300 kills in two separate seasons. She has a team-high 306 kills for the season and ranks ninth at Hopkins with 62 career kills.

The Blue Jays return to action Saturday as JHU travels to Allentown, Pennsylvania for a Centennial tri-match against Muhlenberg and Swarthmore.
