Hopkins Women Finish Eighth at Centennial Championships May 5, 2002
COLLEGEVILLE, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's track and field team finished eighth at the 2002 Centennial Conference Championships this weekend at Ursinus College. The Blue Jays totaled 44 points and were 11 points out of seventh place.
Junior Kathy Darling starred for the Blue Jays as she broke her conference records in the discus and the javelin. Darling won the discus with a throw of 155' 2.0" and took the javelin title with a mark of 159' 3.0". Darling, who has qualified for the NCAA Championships in the discus and javelin, also finished fourth in the shot put with a season-best mark of 34' 0.75". She scored 25 of JHU's 44 points for the championships.
The Blue Jays recorded three top-five marks on the first complete day. Sophomore Aline Bernard finished fourth in the 10,000-meter run with a season-best time of 38:09.26, while sophomore Megan Carr was fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 8' 11.75". Junior Tricia Quartery had a season-best mark of 5' 0.25" in the high jump to finish in fifth place. Bernard cut 30 seconds off her school record in the 10,000 meter run and has qualified for the NCAA Championships.
JHU added points in three more events, led by freshman Hannah Bracken, who took seventh in the 400-meter dash with a season-best time of 1:00.94. Junior Jackie Evans finished seventh in the shot put with her best mark of the season (33' 3.0"). The 4x800-meter relay team added a single point as JHU finished eighth with a time of 10:11.06.
