Blue Jay Women Place 10th at Maryland Invitational April 6, 2003
COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's track and field team finished 10th out of 13 schools at the 2003 University of Maryland Invitational on Saturday. The Blue Jays totaled 23 points to finish tied with Montclair State University for the 10th spot.
The University of Maryland won the meet with 232 total points, while Essex Community College was second with 66.5 points and Coppin State University placed third with 64 points. Long Island University (60.5 points) and Lehman College (56) rounded out the top five.
Senior Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) was the top performer on the day for the Blue Jays as she won the javelin and discus to total 20 points. She broke her school record in the discus and outdistanced the field by a wide margin with a throw of 159'0.5". Darling then recorded a season-best mark in the javelin with a throw of 143'1.5".
JHU scored its final three points in the 4x400 meter relay as the team finished 10th with a season-best time of 4:20.12.
Several other Blue Jays performed well on the day and posted their best marks of the season. Freshman Joanna Cohen (Roslyn, NY/Roslyn) finished 25th in the long jump with a season-best mark of 14'3.25" and placed 29th in the 200-meter dash with her best time of the year (28.34).
Sophomore Jessica Bylander (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) was 19th in the 400-meter dash as she recorded a season-best time of 1:04.09, and sophomore Maureen Kimsey (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) finished 16th in the 1,500-meter run with her best time of the year (5:22.83).
The Blue Jays return to action Tuesday as Hopkins travels to McDaniel College for the 2003 Twilight Meet.
