Sept. 21, 2006 ELIZABETHTOWN, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team, which finished the 2005-06 season ranked 10th in the Atlantic South Region, beat Elizabethtown, ranked #13 in the final Atlantic South Region poll in 2005-06, 8-1 Thursday afternoon. Hopkins remained unbeaten at 5-0 on the season, while Elizabethtown suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 6-1.

Hopkins opened up play by winning at first and third doubles, to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles action. All three doubles matches were decided by 9-8 scores. Freshman Amanda Schubert and sophomore Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) defeated Emma Smith and Stacy Shapiro at first doubles. Junior Tanya Gulnik (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) and freshman Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) paired for the win at third doubles. Senior Becky Busch (Winnetka, IL/New Trier Township) and freshman Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township High School) fell at second doubles to Emily Swarr and Alice Yu.

In singles play, Hopkins swept all six matches in straight sets to take home the 8-1 win. Matava, ranked #13 in the region, beat Smith at first singles 6-2, 6-2. Matava moves to 4-0 on the season. Bhamidipati earned her first singles win of the season, beating Shapiro at two, 6-3, 6-3. Schubert moved to 3-0 with a win over Swarr at three. She won 6-4, 6-0.

Gulnik, playing at four, moved to 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Cathie Martinez. Busch defeated Yu 6-2, 6-1 at five to also move to 3-1. And at six, Berlinghof remained unbeaten at 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Heather Lander.

Hopkins returns to action at the ITA Southeast Regional Tournament, held at the University of Mary Washington. The tournament begins at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 23 and wraps up Monday, September 25. Several Blue Jays are ranked in the women's champ singles: Matava is seeded fifth, Bhamidipati is seeded eighth and Gulnik is seeded 11th. In addition, Matava and Schubert are seeded seventh in the women's champ doubles.
