COLLEGEVILLE, PA - The #15 Johns Hopkins women's tennis team shut out the Ursinus Bears 9-0 Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The win completed an undefeated conference season for the Blue Jays, their first in 14 seasons of Centennial play. Hopkins (14-3, 10-0 CC) will host the 2007 Centennial Conference championships next weekend.

The Blue Jays opened by sweeping all three doubles matches in commanding fashion. Sophomore Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) and freshman Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township High School), the #3 ranked doubles pair in the region, won 8-1 at first. They beat Jill Alspach and Jenna Hope. At second, junior Tanya Gulnik (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) and freshman Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) won their 18th match of the season, tying the school single-season record. They also won 8-1, beating Laura Ng and Leah Stambaugh. And at third, junior Stephanie Carr (West Hills, CA/La Reina) and freshman Jib Vasoontara (Bangkok, Thailand/Ruamrudee International School) defeated Pam Odorizzi and Molly McGlinchey 8-2.

In singles, Hopkins once again swept every match to complete the shutout. In fact, the Blue Jays lost just five games out of 12 sets. Matava won her 17th match of the season and eight straight, beating Hope at first. Bhamidipati tied the school single-season record for singles wins (18) with her win over Ng at second. Gulnik picked up with #14 at third, beating Lindsey Kunkel.

Berlinghoff earned win number 15 this season, beating Odorizzi at fourth. Freshman Arthika Chandramohan (San Marino, CA/San Marino) beat Rachael Sussman at fifth for her first career win. And at sixth, sophomore Dory Giannos (Darien, CT/Darien) won her fourth straight by beating Gracie Gallo.

Hopkins 14 wins this season is tied for the most in a season. The Blue Jays first won 14 matches in a season in 2004-05, head coach Chuck Willenborg's first with Hopkins. The Centennial Conference Championships are set for Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29. Times and matches will be announced Monday afternoon.
