BRYN MAWR - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team, ranked #9 in the Atlantic South, rolled to its sixth straight win Saturday afternoon with a 9-0 blanking of Bryn Mawr. The Blue Jays, who move to 11-2 overall and 5-2 in Centennial Conference play, have shutout five opponents this season. The Owls fall to 6-10 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

Hopkins opened the match by sweeping all three doubles matches, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. At first doubles, freshman Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) and sophomore Tanya Gulnik (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) paired for an 8-1 win over Jessie Tarlov and Marie Sager. The duo improves to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in conference action. At second doubles, junior Becky Busch (Winnetka, IL/New Trier Township) and freshman Debbie Blass (Bridgeport, NY/Chittenango) combined for an 8-6 win over Karen Ginsburg and Steffi Aspero. They improve to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. And at third doubles, senior Jill Seidman (Arlington Heights, IL/Buffalo Grove) and sophomore Stephanie Carr (West Hills, CA/La Reina) paired for an 8-4 win over Leah Blankenship and Melissa Mansh. The pair improves to 2-0 overall and in conference action.

In singles action, the Blue Jays completed the sweep with wins at all six singles matches. Matava, ranked #10 in the region, started things with a straight sets win at first singles. She beat Ginsburg 6-1, 6-2 and improved to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in conference action. Gulnik, ranked #25 in the region, moved the Jays to a 5-0 lead with a straight sets win over Blankenship. She won 6-1, 6-0 to remain unbeaten at 13-0 overall and 7-0 in conference play. At third singles, Seidman improved to 3-0 and 9-1 overall with a three set win over Tarlov. She won the first set 6-4 but dropped the second 6-2. Seidman rebounded in a super tiebreaker 10-7 to take the match. At fourth singles, Busch improved to 5-0 and 7-1 overall with a straight sets win over Sager. She won 6-3, 6-0. Junior Priya Puri (Wayzata, MN/The Blake School) won at fifth singles 6-1, 6-2 over Mansh. And at sixth singles, sophomore Mary Gorski (Birmingham, MI/Shrine Catholic) moved to 8-2 overall with a straight sets win over Aspero 7-6, 6-1.
 

 

Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, April 16 as the team visits Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, PA. The non-conference match is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
