CHESTERTOWN, MD - The #26 Johns Hopkins women's tennis team (9-2) defeated a nationally ranked opponent for the first time under head coach Chuck Willenborg Saturday with a 5-2 win over #10 Carnegie Mellon (6-4). It was the third straight win for the Blue Jays.

Hopkins opened the match by sweeping the doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead. Sophomore Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) and freshman Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) defeated #3 Mona Iyer and Amy Staloch at first doubles. Junior Tanya Gulnik (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) and freshman Amanda Schubert (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin) then won at second singles over #12 Alisa Liebowitz and Andrea Meythaler. They completed the sweep of doubles when Gulnik and freshman Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) defeated #30 Claire Weiss and Samantha Schultz.

In singles action, the teams played the first four singles matches before the lights went out in the indoor facility and the match was called. Staloch, #1 in the region, defeated #11 Matava at first singles in three sets. At second singles, #16 Bhamidipati won in straight sets. Schubert, ranked #21, beat #19 Meythaler in straight sets at third singles. Liebowitz, ranked #20, defeated Gulnik in three sets at fourth singles.
 

 

Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, March 27 at #19 Swarthmore. The match is set to begin at 3:30 pm.
