Hopkins Picks Up First Win With 9-0 Shutout Of Gettysburg March 24, 2003
Gettysburg, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season with a 9-0 shutout of Gettysburg Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Vandna Jerath (Augusta, GA/Augusta Prep) defeated Tracy Rogers 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles while sophomore Michelle Liang (Rochester, NY/Brighton) shut out Meredith Masters 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 for the Blue Jays, who improved to 1-3 this season. Junior Cara Loeys (Oxshott Surrey, England/American Community School) defeated Tara Slade 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, and junior Liz Crowe (Wilmington, DE/Alexis I. duPont) needed a tiebreaker to get past Sara Seibert 6-4, 5-7 (10-3) at No. 4. Freshman Amanda Leese (Amherst, NH/Bishop Guertin) continued her impressive start by defeating Becky MacMillan 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, while freshman Pauline Pelletier (Arlington, TX/MB Lamar) bested Carrie Hemphill 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6. Loeys and Jerath defeated Rogers and Masters 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, while Jerath and freshman Jill Seidman (Arlington Heights, IL/Buffalo Grove) topped Slade and Seibert 8-4 at No. 2. Crowe and Leese completed JHU's doubles sweep by besting MacMillan and Hemphill 8-0 at No. 3. The Blue Jays host Centennial Conference opponent Ursinus Saturday at 12 noon. Johns Hopkins def.
