CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team rebounded from a loss to host Washington College with a 9-0 win over Meredith for their first win of the spring.
The Blue Jays opened the match with a sweep of the doubles matches, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead. Freshman Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) and sophomore Tanya Gulnik (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) paired for an 8-2 win over Meredith Roberson and Sydney Williford at #1. Senior Jill Seidman (Arlington Heights, IL/Buffalo Grove) and junior Becky Busch (Winnetka, IL/New Trier Township) paired to beat Leigh Smith and Holt Gooch 8-3 at #2. And at #3, sophomores Holly Clare (Skillman, NJ/Montgomery) and Stephanie Carr (West Hills, CA/La Reina) defeated Caitlin Dillon and J. Hardee 8-2.
In singles play, Hopkins completed the shutout, sweeping all six matches. Matava easily beat Roberson 6-1, 6-0 at #1 and Gulnik beat Smith 6-2, 6-1 at the #2 spot as both remained unbeaten. At #3, freshman Debbie Blass (Bridgeport, NY/Chittenango) defeated Williford 6-0, 6-1. Seidman remained unbeaten at #4 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Gooch. Sophomore Mary Gorski (Birmingham, MI/Shrine Catholic) also remained unbeaten, winning 6-2, 6-4 over Dillon. And Carr earned her first win in her first match of the spring with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hardee.
