MELBOURNE, FL - The #26 Johns Hopkins women's tennis team (6-2) dropped its second straight match, falling to Division II Florida Tech 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon. Tuesday afternoon, Hopkins defeated Flagler 6-3 and then fell to NJIT 6-3 on Wednesday morning.

The Panthers won two doubles matches to take an early 2-1 lead heading into singles play. Mikaela Horvathova and Natalia Ramos, ranked #8 in the southeast region, beat sophomore Brittany Matava (Denver, CO/Littleton) and freshman Anita Bhamidipati (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township High School) 8-2 at first doubles. At second doubles, Andrea Madrigal and Nicole David defeated freshman Amanda Schubert (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin) and senior Becky Busch (Winnetka, IL/New Trier Township) 8-6. Junior Tanya Gulnik (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) and freshman Ellen Berlinghof (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) earned a point for the Blue Jays with an 8-1 win over Mandy Rohrbach and Aya Nakatsuji at third doubles.

In singles play, Florida Tech won at first, second and third singles to win the match. Mattava, ranked #11 in the Atlantic South, lost 6-4, 6-1 to Horvathova. Madrigal then defeated Bhamidipati, ranked #16, 7-5, 7-6. Schubert lost to #12 Ramos, 6-2, 6-0 at third singles. Gulnik won at fourth singles, defeating David 6-3, 6-4. At fifth singles, Busch beat Tania Gray easily, 6-0, 6-0. And at sixth singles, sophomore Debbie Blass (Bridgeport, NY/Chittenango) also won easily, beating Valerie Rapson 6-0, 6-0.
 

 

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 17 against the Muhlenberg Mules. The Centennial Conference match is set to begin at 1:00 pm in Allentown, PA.
