Baltimore, MD - Johns Hopkins senior defender Kate Gilland (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) has been named the Collegiate Player of the Year by the Women's Lacrosse Club of South Jersey.

Gilland started all 17 games on the Hopkins defense this season, tying for second on the Blue Jays with 42 ground balls and 21 caused turnovers. She tied for fourth in the American Lacrosse Conference with 1.23 caused turnovers per game and was tied for fifth in the league with 2.47 ground balls per game.

Gilland had four ground balls and four caused turnovers in the 14-7 victory at George Washington on March 4, and added five ground balls and a caused turnover in the 13-7 win over American on March 24. She posted four ground balls and a caused turnover on April 23 in the Blue Jays' 13-12 win at sixth-ranked Notre Dame, and two days later recorded three ground balls and three caused turnovers at No. 11 Northwestern. In JHU's regular season finale at 18th-ranked Penn State on May 1, Gilland picked up four ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Gilland finished her career seventh on the Hopkins Division I career ground balls and caused turnovers lists with 147 and 64, respectively.

Led by Gilland and junior Lacey-Leigh Hentz (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll), the Hopkins defense ranked second in the conference and 19th in the nation this season with 9.29 goals allowed per game, as the Blue Jays went 12-5 and made their first appearance in the NCAA Division I Tournament.
