Key Chasing History
March 27, 2006 BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins junior attacker Mary Key (Stevensville, MD/St. Mary's) has been chasing down records since she put on a Blue Jays' uniform just over two years ago. On Sunday, she had a five-point effort against American University and reached yet another milestone in her young career. She became just the fourth player in Hopkins Division I history and eighth overall to reach 200 career points. She is the first player to reach the 200-point mark as a junior since Hopkins moved to Division I.
"Mary Key has made a tremendous impact on the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse program," said Head Coach Janine Tucker. "She has led us to the NCAA Tournament these past two years and is leading us down that path in 2006."
Key now has 203 points in just 40 career games, pushing her past Heidi Pearce (201) into third place on JHU's Division I points list. She is 14 points shy of Erin Wellner's 217 points and 50 shy of career leader Jamie Larrimore with 253 career points. With 131 goals, she ranks third at Hopkins in the Division I era, 21 shy of Pearce and 67 shy of Larrimore. Her 72 assists ranks second, just 19 behind Wellner's career mark of 91.
"Mary is not only a pure finisher but she is one of the best feeders in the game," said Tucker. "I think she is a strong candidate for the Tewaaraton Trophy."
Key is chasing not only Hopkins career marks, but also is chasing several single season marks. She already owns the Division I single season marks for assists (32) and points (87) and Larrimore holds the single-season mark for goals with 59. So far in 2006, she is averaging 7.0 points, 4.0 goals and 3.0 assists per game. At this rate, she is on pace to score 112 points with 64 goals and 48 assists. All would be break the Division I single season marks, including her own.
