Sneak Peak:
#10 Johns Hopkins opens its 32nd season of women's lacrosse against George Washington at Homewood Field today. The Blue Jays return seven starters from last year's team that posted a 12-4 record. The Colonials return eight starters from a team that went 6-11 in 2006.

A Little Reminder:
Johns Hopkins posted a 12-4 record in 2006 and narrowly missed out on a third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Jays ended their season with an 8-7 loss to Georgetown. Hopkins went 3-2 in the American Lacrosse Conference, finishing third. Mary Key broke her own Division I single-season marks for points (101) and assists (41). She also broke Jamie Larrimore's single-season goals record with 60.

For Starters:
Today's game marks just the fifth time in 32 seasons that the Blue Jays have opened their season in February. The earliest opening for Hopkins was on February 24, 2002. The Blue Jays are now 4-1 in February games.

Against the Colonials:
Johns Hopkins and George Washington have met just four times. The Blue Jays have won all four of those meetings. In last season's meeting, the Blue Jays defeated the Colonials in both team's season-opener. Hopkins used a 6-0 second-half run to take control of the game for a 12-8 win. Attackers Mary Key and Sarah Walsh combined for seven goals and six assists and midfielder Kadie Stamper added three goals and one assist.
 

 

Leading the way in the series against the Colonials is Key with 16 points on 10 goals and six assists. Walsh has six career points and Stamper has four against GW. Other scorers are seniors Steph Janice (2g, 1a) and Alex Nolan (1g, 0a) and juniors Lauren Schwarzmann (3g, 0a) and Kirby Houck (2g, 0a).

Against the Atlantic 10:
Hopkins is unbeaten all-time against Atlantic 10 teams. The Blue Jays have beaten George Washington (4-0, last meeting, 2006), Richmond (2-0, last meeting, 2002) and St. Joseph's (2-0, last meeting, 1999).

Home Opener: Hopkins opens the season at home today against George Washington. The Blue Jays are 9-4 under head coach Janine Tucker in home openers and have won their last three.

Top-Freshmen:
Hopkins enters the season with one of the most highly touted recruiting classes in the nation. Inside Lacrosse ranked the Jays Class of 2010 fifth. Freshmen attackmen Brett Bathras and Sam Schrum and defender Angela Hughes were all named "Players to Watch". In addition, freshman middie Kim Dubansky was named a "Blue Chip" recruit

All-Time Record:
Hopkins enters today's game with an overall record of 306-179-4 (.630) in 31 seasons. Only 15 women's lacrosse programs, including seven Division I, have won 300 or more games. The Blue Jays made the move to the Division I level in 1999. Hopkins is 89-44 (.670) in eight Division I seasons.

Home Sweet Home:
The Blue Jays have enjoyed much success at Homewood Field, especially of late. Hopkins went 7-2 at home in 2006 and is 23-6 (.793) dating back to April 25, 2003. Since moving to Division I in 1999, the Jays are 52-21 (.712) at home. In 31 seasons at Homewood, Hopkins posts a record of 171-76-2 (.691).

Preseason Pickings I:
The Blue Jays were picked second in the 2007 ALC Preseason Poll as voted on by the league's coaches. Hopkins just edged out Penn State. Defending ALC and NCAA Champion Northwestern was picked #1.

Preseason Pickings II:
Senior Mary Key and juniors Sarah Gallion, Lauren Schwarzmann and Kadie Stamper were named to the 2007 ALC Preseason Team as decided on by the league's coaches.

Inside Lacrosse also named two Blue Jays to its preseason All-America Team. Key was named first team, while Stamper was named to the second team.

Tewaaraton Trophy Nominee:
Hopkins senior attacker Mary Key has been named to the 2007 Tewaaraton Preseason Watch List. A nominee the past two seasons, Key led the nation in scoring in 2005 and 2006. The list will be voted upon by coaches and narrowed as the season progresses, ultimately reaching a final list of 5 women who constitute the award's finalists.

Poll Position:
Hopkins opens the season ranked #10 in the IWLCA and Inside Lacrosse preseason polls. The Blue Jays are ninth in the Lacrosse Magazine preseason poll.

Eight of Hopkins opponents opened the season ranked in the top-20 of the IWLCA preseason poll, including five who were ranked in the top-10.

500 and Counting:
Johns Hopkins enters the season just 11 games shy of the 500th in program history. Only 11 programs in NCAA history (Division I and III) have played 500 or more games. Atleast nine programs, including Hopkins, will hit the 500-game mark this season.

150 and Counting:
The Blue Jays win over Oregon on March 18, 2006 was the 150th career win for head coach Janine Tucker. Coach Tucker is just the 12th coach all-time to reach the 150-win plateau and just the sixth active coach with 150 wins. Tucker now posts a record of 157-60-0 (.724). Navy head coach Cindy Timchal is the all-time wins leader with 336.

Streaking:
Senior Mary Key enters today's game with a 50-game point streak, the longest in Hopkins Division I history. The streak dates back to her first game in a Blue Jays uniform - February 29, 2004.

Two other Blue Jays enter the season with a point streak - fifth-year senior Sarah Walsh and junior Kadie Stamper. Walsh carries an eight-game point streak into the season opener. During the last eight games of 2006, she scored 14 goals and tallied 18 assists. Stamper enters with a four-game streak, during which she has tallied nine goals and one assist.
