Second-Ranked Maryland Rolls Past No. 19 Blue Jays, 19-4
April 12, 2003 College Park, MD - Kelly Coppedge scored a career-high seven goals while Sonia Judd added three goals and two assists to lead the second-ranked Maryland women's lacrosse team to a 19-4 win over No. 19 Johns Hopkins Saturday afternoon at Ludwig Field. Acacia Walker and Kristie Leggio each recorded a goal and three assists while Delia Cox added three goals for the Terrapins, who improved to 13-1 this season and 5-0 all-time against the Blue Jays. Junior attacker Kate Barcomb (Middlebury, VT/Middlebury) scored a goal and assisted on another to lead Hopkins, which lost its second straight to drop to 6-4.
Maryland jumped on the Blue Jays early by scoring the first seven goals of the game, including four by Coppedge, and taking a 7-0 lead at the 8:51 mark of the first half.
Barcomb put Hopkins on the board by scoring off an assist from sophomore attacker Erin Riordan (Brightwaters, NY/Bay Shore) with 7:21 remaining in the half, and just 1:05 later Barcomb found senior attacker Liz Holland (Catonsville, MD/Mount de Sales) for a goal to cut the Maryland lead to five. However, the Terrapins answered by scoring the final four goals of the period, as Coppedge scored two and Cox and Judd added one, to take a commanding 11-2 lead into the break. Walker and Cox opened the second half with goals to make it a 13-2 game, but JHU junior midfielder Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's) scored an unassisted goal at the 18:15 mark and senior attacker Meghan Burnett (Auburn, NY/Auburn) scored off an assist from freshman attacker Meagan Voight (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) with 16:46 left to cut the Maryland lead to nine. The Terrapins then scored the last six goals of the game to account for the final score. Hopkins senior goalkeeper Jen McDonald (Garden City, NY/Garden City) made seven saves in the first half while freshman Lauren Riddick (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) stopped nine shots in the second period. Maryland held a 42-15 advantage in shots and a 16-9 edge in draw controls. The Blue Jays return to action Wednesday when Hopkins travels to Villanova for a 7 p.m. game with the Wildcats. -30- |
