Hopkins Men's and Women's Track Teams Defeat Swarthmore April 9, 2002
SWARTHMORE, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's and women's track and field teams swept a duel meet against Swarthmore College this past Saturday, with the men winning, 83-49, and the women defeating the Garnet, 78-69.
The women were led by juniors Kathy Darling and Jackie Evans in the throwing events. Darling highlighted the meet as she recorded the best Division III discus throw in the country to date and broke her week old school-record with a throw of 152' 41/2". She also won the javelin with a throw of 127' 10.0" and finished second, with a toss of 31' 8.5", to Evans in the shot put. Evans recorded a mark of 32' 5.75" in the shot put and finished second to Darling in the discus and the javelin with throws of 95' 3.0" and 68' 8.0", respectively.
Sophomore Aline Bernard won the 3,000-meter run by over 41 seconds with a season-best time of 11:04.60, and junior Hilary Knipe easily won the 5,000-meter run by over a minute at a 19:25.53 pace. Freshman Jessica Bylander ran a leg for the winning 4x100 relay team and won the long jump with a mark of 14' 71/4". Fellow freshman Hannah Bracken won the 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 28.48. She then ran a leg in the 4x100 relay and finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 62.48, fourth best in school history.
Sophomore Megan Carr won the pole vault with a mark of 7' 6.0", while junior Tricia Quartey was second in the high jump (4' 6.0"). Also performing well were freshman Maureen Kimsey and sophomore Annie Colabella, who finished second and third in the 800-meter run with times of 2:43.80 and 2:47.65, respectively.
Senior captain Moky Cheung led the men in the throws as he placed in the shot put, the discus, and the javelin. Cheung was second in the shot put (38' 4.75") and the discus (110' 1.0"), while placing third in the javelin with a mark of 116' 2.0". Sophomore Alex Gochal placed second in the javelin with a mark of 129' 10.0", then won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:01.32 and anchored the 4x400 relay team to victory.
Senior captain John Apperson placed second to Gochal in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:01.67, ran the opening leg for the 4x400 relay team, and won the 1,500-meter run at a 4:13.13 pace. Junior Kevin Johnson led the sprinters as he took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.76, and added a win in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.65. Sophomore Ben Stopper completed a successful day, winning the long jump with a mark of 18' 5.75", taking third in the 200-meter dash (24.33), and running a leg on the winning sprint relay team.
Freshman Jesse Fulton won the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.68 and led off the winning relay team, while freshmen Brian Wolcott and Pete Dixon were the top two finishers in the pole vault with marks of 11' 6.0" and 11' 0.0", respectively. Rounding out the top performances were junior Rajeev Mahajan winning the high jump (6' 0.0"), and sophomore Dan MacNeil taking second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.77.
The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, April 20 at the Widener Invitational in Chester, Pennsylvania beginning at 11:00 a.m.
