Johns Hopkins junior Kevin Alford (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon Township) was named to the 2002 All-Centennial Conference Men's Tennis Team and senior Emily Petersen (Cedar Rapids, IA/Linn-Mar) was named to the women's team, the league announced on Wednesday. Alford and Petersen were selected to the singles teams, while Alford and freshman Justin Belisario (Los Angeles, CA/Loyola) were named to the men's doubles team.
Alford, one of six men's singles players chosen, compiled a 10-3 overall record and a 7-1 conference mark at the No. 1 position for the Blue Jays. Alford earned the No. 2 seed in the Centennial Conference Men's Singles Tournament and won two matches before being ousted in the semifinals. Washington College's Jose Lejarraga was named the Men's Player of the Year and was joined on the team by teammates Seth Morgan and Peter Taylor along with Peter Law of Haverford, Greg Bertelson of Dickinson, and Alford.
Alford and Belisario went 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the league this season at the No. 1 doubles, and advanced to the conference final as the top seed in the draw. Rafael Martins and Taylor of Washington, who defeated Alford and Belisario 6-2, 6-2 in the championship, and Jose Lejarraga and Morgan of Washington were also named to the doubles team.
Petersen finished the season with an 8-7 overall record and a 5-5 mark in the Centennial Conference at the No. 1 position. Petersen earned the No. 5 seed in the women's singles draw and won two matches before falling to Swarthmore's Anjani Reddy, the eventual champion. Reddy was named the Women's Player of the Year and was joined on the singles team by Ne'ko Browder of Washington, Alyssa Kennedy of Haverford, Melissa Sviatko of Dickinson, Gena Ross of Muhlenberg, and Petersen. The women's doubles team consisted of Browder and Shoko Nakamura of Washington, Kennedy and Anya Moysten of Haverford, and Mackenzie Parke and Jennifer Chung of Muhlenberg.
