Three weeks after graduating from Johns Hopkins, Jon Kleinman was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Second Team for the Men's At-Large Division. The team was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced Tuesday, June 14.
Kleinman was a four-year member of the Johns Hopkins men's swimming team and helped the Blue Jays to a third-place finish at the 2005 NCAA Championships. He placed 10th in the both the 500 freestyle and the 400 individual medley and finished 12th in the 1650 freestyle at the championships. Kleinman, who captained the team this year, was a first-team All-American as a junior and an honorable mention All-American in his first two years.
A native of North Oaks, Minnesota, Kleinman majored in neuroscience, was the treasurer of the biological honor society, and helped set up the new neuroscience lab for the fall of 2004. He was also a member of the pre-med honor society, SAAC, and the Teaching Excellence Committee.
The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000 member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
