Johns Hopkins Men's Swimming NCAA Championships Review
March 25, 2004 The Team: Johns Hopkins finished in fifth place by earning 229.5 points at the 2004 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships held on March 18-20 in St. Peters, MO. Three School Records Broken: Senior Scott Pitz (Paoli, PA/Conestoga) set school records by swimming the 100 breaststroke in 56.91 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:02.32, while junior J.P. Balfour (Plano, TX/Plano East) set a school record by swimming the 200 backstroke in 1:50.47. Harris Leads Blue Jays: Sophomore Tyler Harris (Lancaster, OH/Lancaster) finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke in 57.11, eighth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:05.28 and 10th in the 50 freestyle in 21.18. He also swam the second leg for the 200 freestyle relay team that placed 11th in 1:24.64, the fourth leg for the 200 medley relay team that came in 11th in 1:34.42 and the first leg for the 400 freestyle relay team that was 12th in 3:07.71. Robinson Ends Career Strong: Senior Kyle Robinson (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) finished 11th in the 100 freestyle in 46.65 and 14th in the 200 freestyle in 1:42.75, and was a member of four relay teams. He swam the fourth leg for both the 400 medley relay team that placed fourth in 3:23.35 and the 800 freestyle relay team that was sixth in 6:52.15. Robinson also swam the third leg for the 200 freestyle relay team that finished 11th in 1:24.64 and the fourth leg for the 400 freestyle relay team that was 12th in 3:07.71. Pitz Scores In Five Events: Scott Pitz ended his career by scoring points in five events, setting school records by finishing third in the 200 breaststroke in 2:02.32 and 10th in the 100 breaststroke in 56.91. He also was 13th in the 200 individual medley in 1:54.28 and swam the second leg for both the 400 medley relay team that placed fourth in 3:23.35 and the 200 medley relay team that came in 11th in 1:34.42. Balfour Earns Points For Hopkins: J.P. Balfour placed ninth in the 200 backstroke in a school-record 1:50.47 and was 11th in the 100 backstroke in 51.80. He also swam the first leg for both the 400 medley relay team that finished fourth in 3:23.35 and the 200 medley relay team that was 11th in 1:34.42. Kleinman Picks Up Valuable Points: Junior Jon Kleinman (North Oaks, MN/Mounds View) finished seventh in the 1650 freestyle in 15:53.95, 11th in the 500 freestyle in 4:35.40 and 12th in the 400 individual medley in 4:03.36. Sneed Scores In Three Events: Sophomore Brian Sneed (Chattanooga, TN/McCallie) finished ninth in the 500 freestyle in 4:34.56, swam the third leg for the 400 medley relay team that placed fourth in 3:23.35 and swam the first leg for the 800 freestyle relay team that came in sixth in 6:52.15. Buccicone Earns Points: Senior Oliver Buccicone (Rochester, MN/Lourdes) finished 13th in the 500 freestyle in 4:37.63 and swam the second leg for the 800 freestyle relay team that was sixth in 6:52.15. Hamilton Swims Relays: Sophomore Zane Hamilton (Chattanooga, TN/McCallie) swam the first leg for the 200 freestyle relay team that finished 11th in 1:24.64 and the third leg for the 400 freestyle relay team that placed 12th in 3:07.71. Itskovich, Kim Swim 200 Fly: Sophomore Gary Itskovich (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) finished eighth in the 200 butterfly in 1:54.34 while sophomore Sean Kim (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) placed 14th in the event in 1:53.82. Chana Swims 1650 Free: Sophomore Matt Chana (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) finished ninth in the 1650 freestyle in 15:59.77.
Four Blue Jays Swim Relays: Junior Paul Zalewski (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood) swam the fourth leg for the 200 freestyle relay team that finished 11th in 1:24.64, while senior Matt McKee (Rocky River, OH/St. Edward) swam the third leg for the 200 medley relay team that was also 11th in 1:34.42. Freshman Rich Guerard (Chatham, NJ/Morristown-Beard) swam the third leg for the 800 freestyle relay team that placed sixth in 6:52.15, and senior Loren Robinson (Coats, NC/Triton) swam the second leg for the 400 freestyle relay team that finished 12th in 3:07.71.
