Ninth in a Row For #11 Hopkins, Shutout Swarthmore 2-0
Oct. 14, 2006
BALTIMORE, MD - The #11 Johns Hopkins men's soccer team defeated Swarthmore 2-0 at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays move to 13-1-0 overall and 6-0-0 in the conference to remain in first place. The Garnet falls to 8-4-1 overall and 3-3-0 in the conference. This is the ninth straight win and eighth straight shut out for Hopkins. It took until the 57th minute, but Hopkins finally found the back of the net to end the scoreless tie. Junior Mo Hamzeh (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) scored his second of the season to put the home team up 1-0, when he ripped a shot from about 25 yards out that found the far right post. The Jays added an insurance goal from freshman Max Venker (Oldsmar, FL/Palm Harbor University High) in the 82nd minute. Freshman Nick Kosik (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) crossed the ball from the right touchline and Venker one-timed it to the bottom left corner for his third of the season. The Garnet fired off seven shots in the game, but senior goalie Danny Coble (Fremont, CA/Bellarmine Prep) was up to the task, posting his eighth consecutive shutout and 10th on the season. Swarthmore goalie Zach Weimar finished with seven saves in the loss. The Blue Jays return to action on Wednesday, October 18 as they host the Arcadia Knights. Game time at Homewood Field is set for 4:00 p.m. in Hopkins final non-conference match of the season.
