Box Score

SEWANEE, TN - Sophomore Evan Giles (Ponte Verde Beach, FL/Episcopal) netted his first career hat trick as #7 Hopkins (2-0) dominated Fisk (0-2) in an 8-0 win at the Kyle Rote, Jr. Invitational. Junior co-captain Matty Carlson (Bristol, CT/Loomis Chaffee) was named the Defensive MVP as Hopkins claimed the 2007 title.

Hopkins jumped on the board early when senior Mo Hamzeh (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) scored in the fifth minute. Less than two minutes later, Giles found the net for his first of the afternoon off an assist from junior Nick Gauna (Evanston, IL/Evanston). The scoring continued in the 25th minute when freshman Scott Bukoski (Sagamore, MA/Bourne) scored his first career goal with Gauna picking up his second assist of the day. The game took an interesting turn when Fisk's goalie was sent from the field after being red carded in the 28th minute.

Coming out of the locker room with a 3-0 lead, the field opened up even more for the Blue Jays when a second Fisk player was sent off in the 50th minute. Just over six minutes later, Hopkins capitalized when sophomore Chand Balfour (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) scored his first of the season off an assist from sophomore Max Venker (Oldsmar, FL/Palm Harbor University High).

Giles notched his second goal of the game in the 70th minute on an unassisted strike. Just two minutes later, freshman David Drake (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) scored his second of the weekend on a ball from sophomore Nick Kosik (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus). Ten minutes after his second goal, Giles completed his hat trick off an assist from Bukoski. Hamzem then closed out the scoring just 32 seconds later with his second of the day.

Freshman Neil MacLean (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's School) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Blue Jays and earned his first career shutout while facing just five shots. In addition to Carlson, Gauna, sophomore Akash Naik (Simpsonville, SC/Hillcrest) and freshman Evan Kleinberg (South Orange, NJ/Columbia) were named to the all-tournament team.

The Blue Jays return to action on Wednesday, September 5 as they travel to the Eastern Shore to face the St. Mary's Seahawks in a 4:00 pm match-up.
